Disktree — Free Download. Disk Space Analyzer

Disktree is a disk space browser built around a treemap that renders directories as nested rectangles scaled to the bytes they hold. It scans a home directory or a whole volume, draws the result as a colour-coded mosaic, and separates the act of marking from the act of deleting so that nothing is lost by accident. Three ranking modes cover space, file count and last write time, and a side panel reports the selection in detail, including git state for checkouts. Trash and permanent deletion are both available, with a review screen and a confirmation dialog standing between a mark and the loss of data.

The interface is designed for keyboard and mouse alike. Scrolling magnifies toward the pointer and enters directories in one motion, arrow keys and Enter move the selection, and a trail across the top provides sideways jumps to sibling directories ordered by size. A volume picker resets the scan root to any mounted filesystem, and widening from a home directory to the whole disk reuses the tree already measured so only unfamiliar territory is read. On Windows, running as administrator reads the master file table directly, which is faster than a walk and reaches locations the walk cannot open.

Removal rules are strict and individually tested. Only paths under the scanned root qualify, the filesystem root and the home directory are refused, mount points and system trees are refused, and symlinks are unlinked rather than followed. Nothing is passed through a shell, so a file named with dashes remains a file. The program is written in Rust with the GPUI framework, follows the Omarchy theme through its binding, and tiles correctly under Hyprland, with a float and size rule available for the window class disktree.

Use Cases for Disktree

Directories drawn as nested rectangles proportional to consumed space Diagonal hatch marks reclaimable caches, sync history, build output
Size mode reports st_blocks times 512, matching du output Files mode ranks by count, Age mode by most recent write
Marking a directory absorbs marks already placed inside it Marked tiles take danger colour, projected saving counted once
Top bar path crumbs jump to directories, dropdown lists siblings Dimmer crumb above scanned root widens the scan on click
Scrolling magnifies toward pointer until directory fills view Enter descends, Backspace or Escape ascends, zero resets view
Angle bracket keys step backward and forward through visited directories Alt arrows, Command bracket, mouse side buttons mirror navigation
c key opens marked items list, individual entries removable Move to trash default, permanent deletion uses rm -rf semantics
Side panel collects largest plausibly removable items by size Suggestions require review and marking before any action
v key opens volume picker ordered fullest first with free space Pseudo-filesystems and duplicate mount points filtered out
Widening reuses existing measured tree with memoization Only parts outside previous root are read during expansion
Scan stays on one volume defined by mount source Snapshot subvolumes excluded, cross flag enters other volumes
Removal refused for filesystem root, mount points, system trees Symlinks unlinked and never followed, nothing passed through shell
Git checkout panel reports changes, stashes, unpushed commits fsmonitor, hooks, pager disabled during inspection queries
Windows allocation from NTFS directory listing at no extra cost Administrator whole-drive scan reads master file table in one pass
Built with GPUI following Omarchy theme and desktop behaviour Hyprland tiles window, Windows macOS GNOME KDE follow system theme
