ExitEcho gives you a clear view of what stays running after a program's window disappears. It reports process names, identifiers, and memory consumption without terminating anything on its own. You decide whether to ignore a process, ignore an entire application, or end selected leftovers after confirmation. The tool runs in the tray and keeps a local history of detected events.
This Windows utility is aimed at users who want to inspect background activity without using complex system monitors. It supports multiple themes and many interface languages, and it can start with Windows if you choose. Monitoring can be paused or resumed from the tray. The application does not require an account and does not send telemetry data.
ExitEcho is portable and licensed under MIT. It has been tested on Windows 11 x64, while Windows 10 compatibility remains unverified. The current executable is unsigned. You can find the source code, published releases, screenshots, and a short demonstration video on GitHub. The program observes applications with visible windows and may miss inaccessible, short-lived, or detached processes.
| Watches for processes persisting after window closure | Delay-based check without code injection or modification |
| Displays process name, identifier, and memory consumption | List refreshes on new events or tray reopening |
| Termination request requires explicit user confirmation prompt | Prevents accidental loss of unsaved background work |
| Single process exclusions apply per parent application | Known helper processes remain permanently suppressed from reports |
| Broad suppression rule covers entire application alerts | Intended for programs with expected background activity |
| Local record stores application name and detection timestamp | Pattern identification through historical event review |
| Runs in notification area with pause and resume controls | Single instance enforcement prevents duplicate monitoring |
| Configurable wait period avoids slow shutdown false positives | Delay adjustment matches individual application behaviour |
| Six visual schemes including OLED-optimised black variant | Theme affects main window and tray menu appearance |
| Twenty-seven language options without restart requirement | Specific language or Windows default selection |
| Optional automatic launch on user sign-in | Startup entry toggleable from settings or system configuration |
| System notification toggle for new detection events | Disabled notifications still populate local history records |
| Detection operates on visible top-level window presence | No modifications applied to monitored applications |
| Memory usage figures aid classification of process purpose | Helps distinguish updaters from unwanted remnants |
| Manual ending gives operator full termination control | Background tasks performing important operations remain protected |
| Other processes from same application remain listed | Ignore rules scoped to individual applications |
| Historical entries never transmitted to external systems | Repeated leftover patterns identifiable from stored records |
| Tray menu provides window access and program exit | No new events recorded while monitoring paused |
| Slow-shutdown processes distinguished from true leftovers | False positive reduction through timing configuration |
| Language changes apply to visible interface text immediately | Startup configuration accessible from multiple locations |
