ProMatte provides a local AI background removal filter for OBS Studio that processes camera frames entirely on your computer without sending data to external servers. The plugin offers seven background modes including removal, blur, solid color replacement, image replacement, video replacement, another OBS source replacement, and dimming. A model generates a per-pixel matte that undergoes joint-bilateral upsampling, feathering, decontamination and halo removal before compositing. GPU acceleration through DirectML supports NVIDIA, AMD and Intel hardware with CPU fallback.
Six presets tune the balance between matte quality and processing speed for scenarios such as webcam use, talking-head recording, gaming streams, high-quality recording, low-end hardware, and green screen replacement. Auto quality mode measures hardware capability and selects appropriate model and resolution settings, remembering the result for future sessions. The render thread never waits for inference because a separate thread computes mattes with a latest-frame-wins mailbox system. Model Manager handles download, checksum verification and selection of AI models, with five models bundled under permissive licences.
The plugin is developed by Hakeemify and licensed under GPL-2.0-or-later. Version 1.0.2 runs on Windows with end-to-end verification, loads and removes backgrounds on Apple Silicon macOS without benchmark data, and builds and loads on Linux without having been run inside a real OBS session. All published performance measurements come from a single 2017 laptop with an Intel i7-7500U and GeForce 940MX running Windows 11. The software collects no telemetry, requires no account, and makes no network requests other than model downloads initiated by the user.
| Makes camera background transparent for scene compositing | Reveal gameplay or slides behind the presenter |
| Blurs room while keeping subject sharp and visible | Create depth-of-field separation without green screen |
| Places flat uniform color behind the silhouette | Feed clean plates into downstream chroma workflows |
| Composites still images behind the camera subject | Deliver virtual backgrounds familiar from conferencing |
| Loops video files behind the presenter in real time | Enable animated backgrounds during live streams |
| Uses any OBS scene source as the background layer | Switch backgrounds without rearranging scene layout |
| Darkens background while preserving foreground brightness | Reduce visual distractions with minimal processing cost |
| Measures hardware and selects fitting model automatically | Maintain real-time performance without manual tuning |
| Offers six presets tuned for specific streaming scenarios | Match matte quality to use case and hardware |
| Stabilises matte temporally using motion analysis | Suppress edge flicker during live broadcasting |
