Aphelion Editor is a graph-based video tool for compositing and visual effects work. Users connect processing nodes to form a pipeline, then watch the result update in real time. The application includes a timeline, media library, and color-accurate viewer. Playback stays fluid through background frame preparation. Exports can be generated as video files or still sequences from any viewer window.
The software package contains a full set of compositing operations: keying, roto masks, point and planar tracking, corner pins, merges, dissolves, color corrections, distortions, and math nodes. Projects are stored as JSON with automatic saving after the first manual save. A plugin interface allows external nodes to be loaded or disabled from the preferences area. Export and tracking jobs are moved to separate threads so the interface does not lock.
Aphelion Editor is written in Python 3.11 and organized into UI, core, rendering, plugin, and packaging components. A command-line tool handles launch, build, and installer generation. The current release is 0.1.0, with documentation available in the project docs folder. The development team is focused on expanding the node library and refining the plugin system for third-party developers.
| Build video pipelines by connecting operation nodes | Real-time graph updates appear instantly in viewer |
| Smooth playback through proxy decoding and caching | Prefetched frames reduce stutter during timeline scrubbing |
| 77 nodes cover compositing, keying, tracking, and math | Complete pipelines without external tools |
| Remove green or blue backgrounds with matte refinement | Spill suppression cleans edge artifacts precisely |
| Create animated bezier masks for subject isolation | Roto shapes integrate with tracking nodes |
| Point and planar tracking for moving elements | Apply tracking data to masks, pins, or stabilization |
| Map image to four corners of another frame | Screen replacements and perspective matching |
| Combine layers with blend modes and dissolve transitions | Opacity control for multi-layer compositing |
| High precision float32 RGB preview | Avoids banding and preserves highlight detail |
| Timeline and media pool integrated with graph | Changes reflect across sequence and assets |
| Projects saved as human-readable JSON files | Autosave after initial save path set |
| Export MP4 or PNG sequence from any viewer | Rendering runs on separate thread |
| Third-party nodes via Aphelion SDK | Plugins managed from Preferences panel |
| CLI for launching, building, and packaging | Automation options for developers and advanced users |
| Export and tracking off the UI thread | Continue working while background tasks execute |
| Full documentation in project directory | Covers nodes, architecture, plugins, and CLI commands |
