Aphelion Editor

Aphelion Editor — Free Download. Node compositor

Aphelion Editor is a node-based video compositing application for real-time editing, visual effects, and motion graphics. It provides a graph system where video pipelines are built by connecting 77 built-in nodes, with instant preview and export from any viewer. The workspace includes a node graph, timeline, media pool, property inspector, and a float32 RGB viewport for accurate color work. Real-time playback is achieved through proxy decoding, frame caching, and prefetching, enabling smooth interaction with complex graphs. Projects are stored as JSON files with autosave, and export options include MP4 and PNG sequences.

  • Node Graph System. The core workspace where users build video pipelines by connecting nodes. Each node represents a specific operation such as input, color correction, filter, transform, keying, tracking, or math. The graph supports real-time updates, so changes appear immediately in the viewer without manual refresh.
  • Real-Time Playback Engine. The engine uses proxy decoding, frame caching, and prefetching to maintain smooth playback even when the node graph contains many operations. Frames are prepared ahead of time and stored in memory, reducing stutter during timeline scrubbing and viewer playback.
  • 77 Built-In Nodes. The editor ships with a large set of nodes covering input/output, color correction, filters, compositing, transforms, keying, roto, tracking, timing, distortions, stylization, and math operations. This allows complete video pipelines to be constructed without external tools.
  • Chroma Keying and Matte Tools. Dedicated nodes for chroma keying, matte refinement, and spill suppression. Users can remove green or blue backgrounds, clean edge artifacts, and adjust matte density with precise controls. These tools are designed for compositing foreground elements onto new backgrounds.
  • Bezier Roto Shapes. Roto nodes allow the creation of bezier-based masks and shapes. Users can draw, edit, and animate roto shapes over time to isolate subjects or create garbage mattes. The roto system integrates with the tracking nodes for moving masks.
  • Point and Planar Tracking. Tracking nodes perform point tracking and planar tracking on video frames. Tracking data can be applied to roto shapes, corner pins, or transforms. This is used for attaching elements to moving objects or stabilizing footage.
  • Corner Pinning. The corner pin node maps an image or video to four defined corners of another frame. This is used for screen replacements, sign inserts, or matching perspective of a plane in the footage. The corners can be animated using tracking data.
  • Merge and Dissolve Operations. Compositing nodes include merge and dissolve functions for combining multiple layers. Merge supports various blend modes and opacity controls. Dissolve creates a smooth transition between two inputs based on a mix factor.
  • Float32 RGB Viewport. The viewer displays video in float32 RGB color space, providing high precision for color grading and compositing. This avoids banding artifacts in gradients and preserves data in highlights and shadows during preview.
  • Timeline and Media Pool. The timeline allows arranging clips and nodes in a sequence. The media pool holds imported footage and assets. Both panels are integrated with the node graph, so changes in one area reflect in the others.
  • Project Autosave and JSON Storage. Projects are saved as .aph JSON files. Once a save path is set, the editor automatically saves changes at intervals. The JSON format is human-readable and can be inspected or modified externally.
  • Export from Any Viewer. Users can export the output of any viewer in the workspace. Export options include MP4 video and PNG image sequences. Rendering runs on a separate thread to keep the interface responsive during export.
  • Plugin System via Aphelion SDK. The editor supports third-party nodes through a sibling SDK called aphelion_sdk. Plugins can be installed, enabled, disabled, or reloaded from the Preferences panel. This allows extension of the node library without modifying the core application.
  • Command-Line Interface. A CLI is included for launching the application, building from source, packaging distributions, and generating installers. The CLI provides automation options for developers and advanced users.
  • Multithreaded Export and Tracking. Exporting and tracking operations run off the UI thread. This prevents long renders or tracking jobs from freezing the interface. Users can continue working in the node graph while background tasks execute.
  • Documentation Directory. Full documentation is stored in the /docs directory of the project. The documentation covers node usage, architecture, plugin development, and CLI commands. It is structured for both users and developers.

Aphelion Editor began development as a personal project to create a desktop node-based compositor that would run on Python without relying on commercial video editing frameworks. The initial commit was made in early 2024. The application is written in Python 3.11 and uses a clean architecture that separates UI, core logic, rendering, plugins, and packaging tools. The first public release, version 0.1.0, became available in mid-2025.
