Markbit

Markbit — Free Download. Notes With Runnable Code

Markbit is a desktop notebook built for developers, made by Nurullah Turgut. Notes are written in Markdown with live preview, math, Mermaid diagrams, tables, footnotes and charts. The defining element is the code block: every fenced block with a language tag gains a Run button, and its output, errors, exit code and timing stream into a console panel with stdin support. Desktop execution relies on compilers and interpreters already present on the system PATH, covering Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Dart, Java, Kotlin, C, C++, C#, Go, Rust, Ruby, PHP, Lua, Perl, Bash, PowerShell, Swift and R. SQL blocks run locally against a bundled SQLite engine, and blocks inside one note share a single database, so CREATE, INSERT and SELECT operate on the same data. Tasks with due dates, priorities and repeat rules, a calendar, nested notebooks, hierarchical tags, wiki links, a link graph, version history, password-locked notes, backups, and import from Obsidian, Notion, Evernote and Joplin complete the set.

  • Markdown editor. The editor provides syntax highlighting, line numbers, smart list continuation and three layout modes: edit, split and preview. Formatting covers headings, emphasis, links, block quotes, task checkboxes, tables, footnotes, image galleries and colored text. Math is rendered from single and double dollar delimiters, and Mermaid blocks produce diagrams from text definitions. The preview updates while typing, so the rendered form of a note is visible without leaving the editing surface or switching to another application.
  • Code execution. Any fenced code block carrying a language tag receives a Run button, and the shortcut Ctrl+Enter triggers execution from inside the block. Results are captured in a console panel that displays standard output, standard error, the process exit code and elapsed time. Programs that read from standard input accept typed values through the same panel. Desktop runs use the toolchains already installed on the machine, so no bundled runtime is required for the supported languages.
  • SQL blocks. SQL fenced blocks are executed by a bundled SQLite engine that works without an external server or installation. All SQL blocks within one note operate on the same database instance, which means a CREATE statement in one block, an INSERT in a second block and a SELECT in a third block interact with identical tables and rows. This arrangement supports note-based data exploration, query practice and schema prototyping inside a single document.
  • Remote execution. Execution can be redirected to a self-hosted Piston server instead of the local machine. The address is configured by the operator, and code is transmitted only when that configuration exists. This option suits environments where local compilers are unavailable, where a uniform runtime version is required across machines, or where execution must be isolated from the device holding the notes.
  • Tasks and reminders. Checkboxes are promoted to tasks that accept due dates, priority levels and repeat rules covering daily, weekday, weekly, monthly and yearly intervals. Reminders are delivered through system notifications and arrive even when the application is minimized or closed. A task dashboard groups entries into Today, This week and Overdue views, and the monthly calendar shows tasks together with repeating occurrences and daily notes.
  • AI assistant. The assistant communicates with any OpenAI-compatible API, including OpenAI, OpenRouter, Groq, Gemini, Mistral and DeepSeek, plus local models served by Ollama or LM Studio. It reads the note currently being edited and accepts additional notes or files as context. Proposed modifications are presented for review and reach the note only after approval. Supported work includes chart and mind map creation, test writing, code explanation and defect correction. Multiple conversations per note and a reasoning-effort selector are available.
  • Search. Search is typo-tolerant and supports field filters such as tag, notebook, status, kind, language, pinned, starred, locked, has, created and updated. Values accept relative periods and comparison dates, terms can be excluded with a leading minus sign, and alternatives combine with OR. Matching text is highlighted in results, and any query can be stored as a collection that appears in the sidebar for repeated use.
  • Linking and structure. Wiki links connect notes through double-bracket references, and backlinks list every note that points to the current one. An outline panel presents the heading structure of the open document, while an interactive link graph visualizes connections across the library. Notes can be grouped into nested notebooks and labeled with hierarchical tags such as project/frontend, and tags can be merged when duplicates appear.
  • Templates and daily notes. Templates support variables including date, weekday and cursor position, and are inserted when a new note is created from them. Daily notes generate a dated document on demand, which pairs with the calendar and the task views. Covers, pinning, starring and status labels of Active, On hold, Completed and Dropped give notes a visible place in the overview, which organizes entries by notebook, status and tag.
  • Workspace layout. Notes open in tabs, in side-by-side pairs or in separate windows. Focus mode reduces the interface to the document being edited, and a command palette exposes actions and navigation through keyboard input. Rebindable shortcuts and interface scaling between eighty and one hundred fifty percent adapt the workspace to different keyboards, displays and preferences.
  • Version history. Every note keeps a record of its revisions. Any two versions can be compared in a side-by-side diff that marks added and removed lines, and a single action restores an earlier state. The history protects against accidental deletion of content, unsuccessful edits and unwanted changes introduced by an assistant or an import operation.
  • Protected notes and recovery. Individual notes can be locked with a password and are stored encrypted on disk, so their contents remain unreadable without the credential. Deleted notes pass through a trash that is cleaned automatically on a schedule. Full backups are written to a .markbit archive, daily automatic backups run without intervention, and modifications made to note files by external programs are detected and merged rather than overwritten.
  • Import. Existing material transfers from Obsidian vaults, Notion exports, Evernote .enex files, Joplin .jex archives, and plain Markdown files or folders. During import, notes, links, tags and attachments are mapped into the Markbit structure so that the transferred library remains navigable and searchable.
  • Export. A single note can be written out as Markdown, HTML, Word .docx or PDF. The complete library can be exported as Markdown or published as a static website. These outputs support archiving, printing, sharing with people who do not use the application, and migration to other tools.
  • Appearance. Themes include Light, Dark, Glass in light and dark variants, Solarized, Nord and Dracula. The Glass theme uses the native Windows blur effect. The interface is available in English, Turkish, German and Spanish, and language selection applies across menus, dialogs and settings.
  • Local storage. Each note is saved as one plain JSON file, and writes are performed atomically so that an interrupted save does not leave a damaged document. Files remain readable outside the application and belong to the person who created them. No account is required, no advertisements are shown, and no telemetry is collected or transmitted.

Markbit was created by Nurullah Turgut and has been developed since 2024. The project was written in TypeScript and runs on the Electron framework, with a React interface and CodeMirror as the editing component. Local code execution is handled by Node.js child processes that invoke compilers and interpreters found on the system PATH, while SQL blocks use a bundled SQLite engine. The author maintains the application as a single developer, releasing updates that add languages, refine the task and calendar systems, and extend the AI assistant to new providers.
