Epic Pen — Free Download. Screen annotation

Epic Pen is a screen annotation tool for Windows that enables drawing directly on the desktop and over any active application. It provides a pen for freehand sketching, a highlighter for emphasizing content, an eraser for removing strokes, and a screenshot tool for capturing regions of the screen. Hotkey support gives access to every function during presentations, online classes, design reviews, and live broadcasts without switching between windows.

  • Pen Tool. The Pen tool lets users draw freehand lines and shapes directly over the desktop, open windows, menus, taskbar, and any running application. Stroke thickness can be increased or decreased, and the current color is taken from the active palette. The pen works with a mouse, touch screen, or graphics tablet, which makes it suitable for handwriting, marking diagrams, and circling important details during a live session.
  • Highlighter. The Highlighter draws semi-transparent strokes that do not fully hide the content underneath. It is intended for underlining sentences, marking key figures in documents, and drawing attention to small elements in charts, maps, or code. The highlighter uses the same color selection and stroke size controls as the pen, so switching between precise annotation and emphasis takes one click.
  • Eraser. The Eraser removes individual strokes instead of painting over them with a background color. A single click on a drawn line deletes that line completely, which keeps the overlay clean and avoids smudges. This behavior differs from raster erasers and gives precise control when correcting mistakes or removing outdated marks without clearing the entire screen.
  • Screenshot Tool. The Screenshot tool captures a selected area of the screen, including all current annotations. Captured images can be saved to a chosen folder in PNG format or copied directly to the clipboard for pasting into chat, email, or documentation. This function supports sharing visual explanations without launching a separate screen capture application.
  • Clear Screen. The Clear Screen command removes all annotations from the overlay in one action while leaving the underlying desktop and applications untouched. It is used between presentation sections or after finishing a discussion to start with a blank canvas. The command is available from the toolbar and through a configurable keyboard shortcut.
  • Undo Action. The Undo command reverses the most recent drawing operation step by step. It restores the previous state of the overlay, including deleted strokes and cleared marks, depending on the sequence of actions. Undo helps correct accidental lines and supports experimentation during annotation without permanent changes.
  • Cursor Mode. Cursor Mode temporarily disables drawing tools and returns normal control to the mouse pointer. In this state, users can interact with applications, click buttons, and navigate windows as usual. Switching back to a drawing tool resumes annotation instantly, so no restart of the application is required.
  • Color Palette. The standard color palette contains sixteen selected colors for the pen and highlighter. The Pro version expands the palette to twenty-four colors. Color changes apply to the active tool and affect subsequent strokes, allowing users to separate topics, highlight different categories, or match corporate presentation colors.
  • Pressure Sensitivity. Pressure Sensitivity adjusts line thickness based on the force applied to a compatible pen device, including Wacom tablets and Microsoft Surface products. Light strokes produce thin lines, while stronger pressure creates wider lines. This function reproduces natural handwriting and detailed sketching behavior on screen.
  • Multi-Touch Drawing. Multi-Touch support allows drawing with several fingers at the same time on compatible touch screens. Multiple simultaneous strokes can be created, which is suitable for collaborative marking, quick diagrams, and group work on large displays. The function depends on the hardware capabilities of the touch device.
  • Hotkey Support. Every major function can be triggered by a keyboard shortcut, including toggling visibility, selecting cursor, pen, highlighter, and eraser, undoing actions, clearing the screen, taking snapshots, and adjusting stroke size. Hotkeys are fully remappable, so users can adapt controls to their workflow or presentation remote.
  • Text Tool. Available in Epic Pen Pro, the Text tool places typed text anywhere on the screen. Users choose color and size, click a position, and enter words directly on the overlay. This function is used for labels, comments, and short explanations that require readable characters instead of handwriting.
  • Shapes. The Pro version includes shape tools for lines, ellipses, rectangles, and arrows. Shapes are drawn with the active color and stroke size, and they help create precise diagrams, point to interface elements, and structure visual explanations without freehand inaccuracy.
  • Whiteboard and Blackboard. A Pro feature that turns the entire screen into a white or black background for annotation. This mode hides the desktop content and provides a clean surface for teaching, brainstorming, and live drawing. Switching back restores the normal desktop with the overlay intact.
  • Visibility Toggle. The visibility toggle hides or shows the Epic Pen toolbar and overlay. Hiding the toolbar frees screen space during presentations and recordings while keeping hotkeys active. Showing it again returns access to all tools and settings.
  • Settings Persistence. Epic Pen remembers selected colors, stroke sizes, hotkey assignments, and toolbar position between sessions. Settings can also be reset to default values. Persistent configuration reduces repeated setup before each presentation or lesson.

Epic Pen is developed by Tank Studios, a software company that started the project in 2013. The first public versions were released for Windows and distributed as a lightweight utility for screen annotation. The application was written in C# on the .NET Framework, which provides access to Windows presentation layers, input devices, and graphics APIs. Over the years, Tank Studios added pressure sensitivity, multi-touch support, screenshot capabilities, and a Pro edition with text, shapes, whiteboard, and extended color tools.
