Audionaut

Audionaut — Free Download. Audio Editor and Recorder

Audionaut is a desktop application for audio editing and recording. It provides precise cutting, per-track playlists, multi-channel support, and clean exports. The program handles music production, podcast editing, and multitrack recording without the complexity of a full digital audio workstation. Built-in analysis tools detect segment boundaries and beats. Time-stretch and pitch-shift options modify clip speed. Stem separation splits audio into drums, bass, other, and vocals. MCP integration allows AI assistants to inspect and edit projects through conversational commands.

  • Auto Edit. The Auto Edit function analyzes audio material to find segment boundaries and beats. Create Segments previews musically aligned cuts directly on the clip. The operator adjusts the number of segments, toggles crossfades, and applies the result with one click. Assemble builds new arrangements from segments in order or shuffled, at any target length. This function transforms long takes, jams, and stems into structured tracks.
  • Time-Stretch. Holding Cmd+Alt and dragging a clip edge changes its speed from ×0.25 to ×4. Fades, markers, and waveform follow the change. Re-Pitch mode provides classic varispeed behavior. Time-Stretch mode keeps the pitch while the length changes, powered by the Rubber Band R3 engine. Splitting, cloning, and exporting preserve speed and mode. One undo reverts a stretch.
  • Stem Separation. This function splits any clip into Drums, Bass, Other, and Vocals. Four new tracks appear, ready for arrangement, accessible from the Edit menu. Separation runs entirely on the local machine with a source-separation model downloaded once on first use. Audio never leaves the computer. Mono clips yield mono stems.
  • Playlists. Every track has a playlist kept in sync with the timeline in both directions. The operator names a section once, such as Intro, Theme A, Theme B, or End. Arrangement happens by dragging regions onto the playlist or the timeline in any order and as often as needed.
  • Multi-Channel Cutting. A track holds any number of audio channels, including a multi-channel file or a stack of mono stems dropped at once. Every cut yields a single region carrying all channels. Arranging stays organized and consistent across complex channel configurations.
  • Multi-Track Arrangements. The program layers as many tracks as a piece requires. Each track brings its own playlist, individually synced with the timeline. This function supports complex projects with multiple simultaneous audio sources and independent arrangement structures per track.
  • Audio Recording. Recording works in the traditional start-to-finish way, through punch-in on the fly, or in a loop. Each armed channel produces one file. Every take is undoable. This function covers studio tracking, live capture, and iterative recording sessions.
  • Flexible I/O Routing. Every channel of a track routes to any hardware input or output, or to the Main Bus. The channel strip shows non-default routing at a glance and warns when a port is unavailable. This function manages complex audio interface configurations.
  • Cross-Platform Operation. Audionaut runs natively on macOS, Windows, and Linux. The application uses the same feature set and project format across all three operating systems. This function ensures consistent behavior when projects move between different computers and work environments.
  • High-Quality Export. Bouncing works losslessly to WAV, AIFF, or FLAC, or compressed to MP3 and Ogg Vorbis at a chosen bitrate. Output options include mono, stereo, multi-channel, or multi-mono with an individual file per channel. Offline rendering runs faster than realtime.
  • Open Project Format. Projects are self-contained packages with the project file in plain, human-readable JSON. The format is transparent, diffable, and never locked in. This function supports version control, manual inspection, and long-term project archiving.
  • Supported Formats. Import and export cover WAV, AIFF, MP3, FLAC, and Ogg. This function handles common audio formats for interchange with other applications and playback devices.
  • MCP Integration. The application communicates through MCP, so Claude and other MCP-capable assistants inspect and edit projects conversationally. Commands include splitting tracks at specific bars, naming bar ranges, applying fades, cutting jams into segments, and assembling arrangements. Every timeline operation is available to agents. Each change arrives as one undo step, and saving stays under operator control.

The Audionaut project was created by developer Klaus Voltmer. The program originated as a personal tool for multitrack audio work and grew into a full application. The code base went open source on August 15, 2026, under the GPLv3 license. The full source code is available on GitHub, where developers read it, build it, report issues, and contribute. Audionaut is written in modern C++ on the JUCE framework.
