VidShrink

VidShrink — Free Download. Video compressor

VidShrink is a video processing tool designed to reduce video file sizes by targeting an exact megabyte value rather than relying on trial and error. The program accepts a source video, lets the operator select a desired output size, and then determines the codec, quality level, resolution and frame rate required to land just beneath that limit. Additional modules provide playback, screen recording, editing and format conversion within the same application window.

  • Target size compression. The primary function of VidShrink is shrinking a video file to a specified size in megabytes. The operator enters a target value, and the application calculates the encoding parameters needed to reach it. It selects codec, quality, resolution and frame rate automatically. Before processing begins, the expected output size and a predicted quality score are displayed. The system uses measured cases to ensure the final file does not exceed the requested limit.
  • Size presets and slider. The Shrink tab provides preset buttons for common size ceilings, including 8 MB for strict email gateways, 16 MB for WhatsApp, 25 MB for Gmail and 180 MB for WhatsApp Web. A slider covers arbitrary values outside these presets. Each preset configures all encoding fields at once, removing the need to adjust individual parameters manually.
  • Encoder probing and selection. VidShrink supports twelve encoders, covering software implementations and hardware acceleration through NVIDIA NVENC, Intel Quick Sync and AMD AMF. In automatic mode, the program tests candidate encoders on the local machine by recording short samples and measuring frame drops. The encoder that performs without dropping frames is selected for the final job.
  • Quality scoring with VMAF-NEG. Output quality is evaluated using VMAF-NEG metrics, which report mean score, harmonic mean, tenth percentile and worst frame. These values give a detailed view of how the compressed result compares to the source. The scoring helps the operator decide whether a smaller target size is acceptable for a given video.
  • Batch queue processing. A folder of videos can be added to a batch queue for sequential processing. The queue can open the output folder when finished, put the computer to sleep, or shut the machine down. This suits workflows where multiple files must be reduced to the same size category without supervision.
  • Built-in video player. The player is built on libmpv, the engine used by mpv. It opens MKV, MP4, WebM, AVI, MOV and TS files with hardware decoding available. Controls fade during playback and reappear when the mouse moves. The player includes a side-by-side comparison panel for reviewing source and processed video.
  • Subtitle handling. Sidecar subtitle files load automatically, and dropping a subtitle file into the window activates it. Timing can be shifted in steps, text styling can be adjusted, and OpenSubtitles search and download are integrated directly into the player window. This removes the need for external subtitle utilities.
  • Audio and picture adjustments. The player offers audio track selection, audio delay shifting and a ten-band equaliser. Picture controls include brightness, contrast, saturation, gamma, hue, sharpness, crop, rotate, mirror, aspect ratio and zoom. Playback controls include speed adjustment, frame-by-frame stepping, A-B loop, bookmarks, screenshots, and clip or GIF export from the timeline.
  • Screen recorder. The Recorder tab captures the entire screen, a single window or a user-drawn region. It uses the native capture backend of each platform: gdigrab on Windows, avfoundation on macOS and x11grab on Linux. Microphone and system sound are selected by device name, preventing accidental device swaps when the system reorders the device list.
  • Recording enhancements. The recorder supports webcam overlay with adjustable size and corner placement, including a green-screen option. For tutorials, it can display the cursor, click rings, click sounds, pressed keys on screen and a magnifier. Global hotkeys F7 to F11 are available on Windows, along with countdown, time limits, splitting by time or size, and a replay buffer that retains the last moments before saving.
  • Editor with timeline. The Editor tab loads a video onto a timeline split into three clips. Tools include Split, Delete, Speed, Undo, Redo, zoom, Save, Save As and Share. Each clip can be set to a speed between 0.01x and 100x, played in reverse, moved or removed. Export modes include Fast, which cuts on keyframes without re-encoding, Smart, which re-encodes only what the cuts require, and Full, which re-encodes the entire result.
  • Format conversion. The Convert tab handles MP4, MKV, WebM, MOV, AVI, GIF, animated WebP and animated AVIF containers. Audio-only output includes MP3, M4A, WAV and FLAC. Codec options cover H.264, H.265, VP9, AV1 and direct stream copy. Trimming and audio extraction are included, along with eighteen ready-made targets for WhatsApp, Discord, Telegram, Gmail, Outlook, Chromecast, Nest Hub and Apple TV.
  • Advanced command view. A hidden Advanced tab displays the exact FFmpeg command that will run, along with AI settings and a performance check panel. This gives operators full visibility into the underlying processing and allows verification of the parameters chosen by the automatic mode.
  • File sharing and integration. The Share function uploads a file and returns a link. Storage.to accepts files up to 25 GB with retention from one to seven days, while uguu.se accepts files up to 128 MB with three-hour retention. A QR code is generated for the link, and failed uploads can be retried. On Windows, an Open with VidShrink entry can be added to the Explorer right-click menu, written per user without administrator rights or changes to file associations.

VidShrink was created by Mustafa Özel. The program is written in Python and has been developed since the early 2020s as a practical answer to the recurring problem of video files exceeding size limits imposed by messaging platforms, email gateways and upload forms. The development focus has been on replacing guesswork with measured encoding decisions, which led to the inclusion of encoder probing on the local machine and VMAF-NEG quality scoring. The application requires ffmpeg to be installed, and the home page provides a script for that purpose. The project documentation is stored in docs/kullanim.md, and share target ceilings are defined in paylasim-hedefleri.json, allowing the list of supported destinations to be extended without altering the program logic.
