ShortsJet

ShortsJet — Free Download. Video editor

ShortsJet is a desktop video editor built for short-form content creation. It provides tools for trimming and arranging clips on a timeline, generating automatic captions through local speech recognition, recording voiceovers, applying punch zoom and popup animations, detecting beats in music, inserting freeze frames, adding sound effects and emoji stickers, drawing animated shapes and arrows, capturing screen areas, applying transitions, recording screen video, adjusting color grading and blur, and generating speech from text. The software runs on Windows and Ubuntu, processes media locally on the computer, and exports finished videos as MP4 files in 1080p resolution for platforms such as YouTube Shorts, TikTok and Instagram Reels.

  • Timeline editing. The timeline serves as the central workspace where video clips, images and audio tracks are arranged in layers. Users can trim, split and rearrange clips, adjust playback speed, and build a narrative across multiple tracks. The timeline supports vertical and landscape orientations and keeps all elements synchronized during editing. It provides a visual representation of the project structure and allows precise control over timing and sequencing of every element in the video.
  • Automatic captions. This function generates subtitles from spoken audio using local speech recognition powered by Whisper. The system analyzes the audio waveform and produces timed text clips that appear as editable elements on the timeline. Each caption line can be corrected individually, and the entire caption group can be styled with different fonts, colors, backgrounds and placement options. All processing happens on the computer without uploading media to external servers.
  • Voiceover recording. Users can record audio directly from a microphone into the timeline. The recorded voiceover becomes a separate audio layer that can be combined with music tracks. Volume levels, fade in and fade out, mute and solo options are available for each audio element. Waveforms are displayed visually during editing to help synchronize voice, music and picture accurately.
  • Video format support. The editor handles both vertical 9:16 and landscape 16:9 aspect ratios at 1080p resolution. Footage can be cropped, resized and repositioned within the frame without modifying the original source files. This allows creators to produce content for different platforms from the same recording session by switching between formats.
  • Punch zoom and popup animations. Punch zoom creates a magnifying effect on a specific area of the video to draw attention to details. Popup animation makes titles and shapes grow into view with motion. Both effects include adjustable parameters for focus point, timing and intensity. These tools add dynamic movement to static elements and emphasize key moments in the video.
  • Media library. The media library provides access to the user's own folders containing video, image and audio assets. Files can be dragged directly into the edit from the library panel. A frame from any video can be saved as a PNG image for use as a title or overlay. The library maintains organization of frequently used assets for repeated projects.
  • Beat detection. This function analyzes music tracks to identify beat markers within the audio waveform. Detected markers appear on the timeline and clip edges can snap to these positions. Timing can be fine-tuned manually after detection. The analysis runs locally on the computer, giving the editor control over how cuts align with the rhythm of the music.
  • Freeze frame. A freeze frame inserts a still image into a video clip at a chosen moment. The pause duration is controlled by dragging the edge of the still segment on the timeline. Music and other audio continue playing during the freeze. This effect is used to hold on a reaction, emphasize a detail or create a dramatic pause in the action.
  • Sounds and emojis. The editor includes a collection of 11 sound effects and 40 three-dimensional emoji stickers. Sound effects can be placed on the timeline to accent titles, zooms or transitions. Emoji stickers function as animated overlays that add visual reactions to the story. Both elements are ready to use without additional downloads.
  • Animated shapes and arrows. Hand-drawn style arrows, circles, checkmarks and crosses can be added as animated overlays. Color, stroke thickness and drawing speed are adjustable for each shape. These elements direct viewer attention to specific parts of the frame and can be used to highlight, explain or comment on visual content.
  • Screen capture. A screen area can be captured as a screenshot and added directly to the project timeline. Images from the clipboard can also be pasted into the edit. Captured screenshots become static image clips that can be positioned, resized and timed like other visual elements. This function supports tutorials and explanatory content.
  • Transitions. Five transition types are available for connecting clips: blend, push, wipe and zoom variations. Each transition includes timing adjustments to control duration and placement. Transitions are applied between adjacent clips on the timeline and create smooth visual flow from one shot to the next.
  • Video recording. Screen areas can be recorded as MP4 video files and imported into the project. This function captures walkthroughs, drawing sessions, software demonstrations or other on-screen activities. Recorded video appears as a standard clip on the timeline and can be combined with narration, music and effects.
  • Color grading and blur. Brightness, contrast and saturation adjustments are available for each clip. Color tints can be applied to create specific moods, and blur softens the image. Multiple effects can be combined to achieve a desired look. These tools provide finishing touches without requiring external color correction software.
  • Text to speech. Scripts can be converted into narration using English and German voice options. Voice packs are downloaded within the application, and previews of the delivery are available before adding to the edit. Speech generation runs locally on the computer. Generated audio is placed on the timeline as a standard audio clip.

ShortsJet was developed by Matthias Pieroth, with the copyright notice dated 2026. The program originated as a focused desktop tool for short-form video production, addressing the needs of creators who require caption generation, music-driven cutting and vertical format support without the overhead of professional editing suites. Development prioritized local processing, so that editing, rendering and speech recognition run on the user's computer rather than on remote servers. This decision affects both privacy and workflow speed, since footage does not need to be uploaded before captions can be generated. The software is written in C++ and built for Windows 10 and Windows 11 in 64-bit versions, with a Linux edition for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. A macOS edition is planned.
