Constly is a WYSIWYG Markdown editor for macOS, Windows and Linux that renders Markdown inline as you type. Headings, bold, lists, tables, KaTeX math and Mermaid diagrams all appear in place, with the raw marks showing only where your cursor is. It is built on byte-fidelity: plain text is the document and the view is just a projection, so saving touches only the bytes you changed and never reflows or normalizes Markdown you did not edit, keeping git diffs clean. Free to use with no feature wall, watermark or expiry. After two weeks a weekly reminder appears, and a one-time $19.99 license for up to three devices retires it. Nothing checks and nothing stops you. Live inline rendering. Markdown syntax transforms into formatted output the moment the cursor leaves the edited span. Asterisks around bold text disappear, heading hashes vanish, list markers turn into real bullets, and code fences collapse into styled blocks. Returning the cursor to a line restores the raw marks in place without flicker or layout shift, so editing and reading share the same surface. The renderer handles headings, emphasis, lists, links, blockquotes, code spans and fenced code, keeping each element visually distinct.
Byte-fidelity saving. The editor treats the plain text file as the single source of truth and the rendered view as a projection over those bytes. Saving writes only the bytes that changed, leaving line endings, byte order marks, trailing spaces and untouched paragraphs exactly as they were. A one-word correction produces a one-line diff rather than a whole-file reflow, which keeps version control history precise and reviewable. This behavior is verified against a real-world corpus with every release.
Table grid editing. Markdown tables render as an editable grid. Clicking a cell allows direct typing, Tab moves across columns, and Enter creates the next row. When focus leaves the table, the underlying Markdown source reflows into clean, aligned pipe syntax automatically. The grid can be toggled off to work with raw pipe characters when that is preferred, and alignment markers are preserved through edits.
Math and diagram support. KaTeX renders inline and display mathematics from dollar-delimited expressions. Mermaid diagrams render from fenced code blocks, covering flowcharts, sequence diagrams and related visualizations. When an expression or diagram contains an error, the source remains visible instead of crashing the view. Footnotes and an in-document table of contents marker are also rendered, with each element processed locally.
Focus and typewriter modes. Focus mode dims everything except the sentence currently being edited, reducing visual noise during composition. Typewriter mode keeps the active line vertically centered so the text stays at a consistent position on screen. Both modes can be combined with the editor's themes and typography settings, and they apply without altering the document content in any way.
Modal Vim editing. A real modal Vim layer provides normal, insert and visual modes with a status bar showing the current mode and pending commands. Motions, operators and text objects follow Vim conventions, so users experienced with that editing model can work without leaving the application. The Vim layer is optional and can be enabled or disabled independently of other features.
Command palette and quick open. A command palette opened with a keyboard shortcut provides fuzzy search across every available action. Quick open provides fuzzy file search across the current workspace. Both interfaces allow navigation and execution without leaving the keyboard, and the command set covers editing, navigation, export, view toggles and application settings.
Local version history. Disabled by default, version history can be enabled to snapshot each document on save. The title bar exposes the history, past versions can be diffed against the current state, and any prior version can be restored. Restoration is itself undoable. Snapshots remain on the local machine, are never uploaded, and are governed by a disk usage cap and a list of documents excluded from snapshotting.
Export pipeline. PDF export renders inside the application, fully offline and deterministically, with accessibility tags so screen readers receive real headings and lists rather than text images. Additional export formats include self-contained HTML with math, diagrams, highlighted code and images embedded, plus Word, ODT, RTF, LaTeX and EPUB. Content can also be copied as rich text for pasting into email clients, word processors or chat applications with formatting intact.
Privacy controls. No account is required and no telemetry is transmitted. Remote images are blocked from loading until explicitly permitted, preventing document opens from silently contacting external hosts. All rendering, export and history features operate without network access, and the application never needs to reach a server to open, edit or save a file.
Workspace and session handling. Tabs, workspace-wide search and session restore are built into the application. Reopening the program returns to the same files, tabs and cursor positions as before. Bundled typefaces ensure documents render consistently across machines, and Light, Sepia and Dark themes are available for the editing surface.

Constly was created by RUN THE WALL PTY LTD, a small independent studio. The application is distributed for macOS, Windows and Linux as separate native builds rather than a shared web wrapper, with the core written in Rust and the interface rendered in a native window. Version history and export tooling have been part of the product since its initial public releases, and the byte-fidelity editing model described in the project's documentation is validated against a real-world corpus on every release. macOS builds are signed and notarized by Apple and require macOS 11 or later, Windows builds are signed by RUN THE WALL PTY LTD and support Windows 10 version 1803 and later as well as Windows 11 in 64-bit form, and Linux builds ship as .deb, .rpm and tarball packages requiring system WebKitGTK 4.1, such as Ubuntu 22.04 or equivalent.
