  • Source editing mode. A plain text view for writing Markdown without rendered output. Keystrokes remain close to raw syntax for precise control over formatting.
  • Preview editing mode. A rendered view where Markdown blocks can be edited in place. This removes the need to switch back to source view for small corrections.
  • Split editing mode. Shows source and rendered preview side by side. Changes in one panel appear in the other after a short update cycle.
  • Command palette. A keyboard-driven menu for file actions, view changes, and formatting commands. It reduces dependence on mouse navigation.
  • Slash insertion menu. Typing "/" opens a list of Markdown elements such as headings, lists, tables, and code blocks. Selecting an item inserts the corresponding syntax at the cursor.
  • Table editing tools. Rows and columns can be added, removed, aligned, or cleaned up directly from the preview. This avoids manual pipe and dash alignment for tabular data.
  • Find and replace. Supports plain text, whole-word matching, and regular expressions. Results can be replaced one by one or across the entire document.
  • URL paste linking. Selecting text and pasting a URL wraps the selected phrase in a Markdown link. The pasted address is placed correctly in the parentheses.
  • Mermaid diagram rendering. Twenty-two diagram types are drawn natively in Dart. No browser engine or external service is used for graph generation.
  • Math rendering. Inline and block math use KaTeX-compatible output. Formulas appear in the preview and are preserved during export.
  • Markdown dialect support. CommonMark and GFM features are implemented, including tables, task lists, footnotes, autolinks, and ruby annotations. This increases compatibility with files from other editors.
  • Export to HTML. Converts the document into a standalone HTML file with embedded styles. Suitable for publishing on static sites or sharing via browser.
  • Export to PDF. Produces a PDF version of the rendered document. Mermaid diagrams can be converted to images for this format.
  • Export to Word .docx. Generates a Word document from the Markdown source. Tables, lists, and images are translated into native Word structures.
  • Multi-encoding detection. Handles UTF-8, UTF-16, GBK, and Latin-1 files when detected. This reduces corruption for documents saved with non-default encodings.
  • Atomic saving. Writes to a temporary file first and then replaces the original. This lowers the chance of data loss if the process stops during a write.
  • External change detection. Watches open files for modifications made by other programs. The user is notified instead of silently overwriting external edits.
  • Theme system. Eight built-in color themes cover light and dark environments. Switching themes does not affect document content.
  • Interface languages. Twelve languages are available for menus and dialogs. The selection is stored locally without online translation calls.
  • Desktop platform support. Runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Builds are provided for each operating system without requiring a browser runtime.

MarkText Plus was created by the developer known as SugarFatFree. The project began in 2025 as a Flutter-based alternative to Electron-style Markdown editors. The primary language is Dart, with Flutter as the UI framework. Development focuses on parser correctness, Mermaid support in pure Dart, and export fidelity for PDF and Word.
