Inline spell checking, word counts, a document outline, and Git integration are built in.   • Syntax highlighted Markdown editing. The editor applies color to Markdown syntax elements such as headers, emphasis, links, code blocks, and lists to improve readability and reduce formatting errors during composition.
  • Live synced HTML preview. A collapsible preview pane renders Markdown to HTML as you type and scroll, keeping the preview aligned with the current cursor position in the source document.
  • Inline spell checking. Misspelled words are underlined directly in the editor. The feature operates per document and supports custom dictionaries, ignored words, and user defined language settings.
  • Clipboard image pasting. Images copied to the Windows clipboard can be pasted directly into a Markdown document. The application saves the image to a configurable folder and inserts a proper Markdown image reference automatically.

  • Weblog publishing. Markdown Monster can publish and update posts directly to blog engines that support WordPress, MetaWeblog, Medium, Jekyll, or GitHub. Existing posts can be downloaded and converted from HTML to Markdown.
  • Git integration. The file browser shows Git status indicators for tracked and modified files. A commit dialog supports reviewing changes, staging individual files, writing commit messages, and pushing to remote repositories.
  • Document outline. The outline panel lists all headers in the current Markdown document. Selecting a header moves the cursor to that section, which is useful for navigating long technical documents or documentation sets.
  • Screen capture embedding. A built in capture tool can grab a region of the screen or use SnagIt if installed. Captured images are saved to disk and inserted into the Markdown document as image references.
  • Template text expansion. Frequently used Markdown snippets, signatures, or complex structures can be stored as named templates. Typing the template name expands into the full text block using a configurable shortcut.
  • .NET scripting and addins. Developers can create custom addins using .NET to hook into editor events, modify Markdown rendering, add menu commands, or automate document processing. A command line interface supports batch conversion of Markdown to HTML and PDF.
  • AI image generation. The editor integrates with external AI image generation services through a configurable API key. Users can describe an image, generate it, and insert the resulting file into the current document.
  • Html to Markdown conversion. Existing HTML content can be imported and converted to Markdown. This applies to pasted HTML from a web page or local HTML files opened through the import dialog.
  • Customizable preview themes. The HTML preview rendering can be modified using custom HTML and CSS templates. Users can match the preview appearance to a corporate website, documentation portal, or personal preference.

Markdown Monster was created by Rick Strahl and is developed by West Wind Technologies. The first public release appeared in 2015 after a period of internal development that began as a side project for improving Markdown editing on Windows. The application is written primarily in C# using the .NET Framework and later .NET versions. The editor component is based on a WPF web browser control with an embedded JavaScript editor for the text surface, while the main application shell uses Windows Presentation Foundation for the desktop interface. Development has continued with regular updates that add features such as Git integration, AI assistance, table editing improvements, and publishing workflows.
