HDShredder

HDShredder — Free Download. Secure data erasure

HDShredder is a data erasure program designed to securely destroy data on hard drives, solid-state drives, and flash media at the physical level. It operates independently of the partition layout, file system, and operating system, making it suitable for storage media that use proprietary formats. The software performs complete drive erasure, preparing devices for disposal, recycling, or resale. It supports HDDs, SSDs, and other mass-storage devices through SATA, USB, SCSI, and FireWire interfaces, as well as UEFI and GPT systems. The Free Edition delivers high-speed deletion with achievable performance up to 150 MB/s, roughly 9 GB per minute, depending on the storage device, controller, interface, and system. HDShredder can run under Windows and includes a self-booting version, allowing drives to be erased without relying on the operating system installed on the target drive. The Free Edition also serves to check whether a particular PC and its storage devices are supported.

  • Complete Media Erasure. This function erases an entire storage medium, overwriting all sectors from the first to the last regardless of the file system or partition table. It removes every trace of previous data, including hidden areas, so the drive can be sold, reused, or disposed of without residual information being recoverable through software tools.
  • Physical-Level Deletion. The program addresses storage devices directly at the physical level rather than through the file system. This approach bypasses logical structures such as partitions, boot records, and file allocation tables, ensuring that data remnants in unallocated space and proprietary formats are also destroyed.
  • Partition Selection. In editions above Free, users can choose individual partitions instead of the whole disk. This selective erasure is intended for scenarios where only specific areas must be sanitized while other data remains intact, and it works together with additional security levels for controlled deletion tasks.
  • Multiple Security Levels. The software provides several overwrite levels that differ in the number and pattern of passes. Basic offers three security levels, Standard offers eighteen, and Professional offers 217 security levels with fully customizable procedures. Higher levels increase the effort required for recovery and suit different risk assessments.
  • International Erasure Standards. Starting with the Standard edition, the program implements fifteen international sanitization standards, including recognized overwrite and purge specifications. These standards define fixed pass sequences and verification steps, which is required when erasure must conform to organizational, contractual, or regulatory guidelines.
  • SecureErase and Sanitize. The Professional edition adds device-based purge methods. SecureErase uses commands built into the drive firmware to erase all cells, while Sanitize applies the NIST-compliant purge procedure for modern storage devices. These methods are faster and more thorough for SSDs and NVMe media than overwriting alone.
  • Erasure Certificates. Professional and higher editions generate audit-proof certificates that document the erasure operation. A certificate records the device identity, the method used, timestamps, and the result, providing written evidence that data was destroyed as part of asset disposal or compliance processes.
  • HPA and DCO Removal. The Basic edition and above can remove Host Protected Areas and Device Configuration Overlays. These hidden regions sit outside the normal addressable capacity and may retain data that ordinary deletion cannot reach. Removing them restores full access and allows complete erasure of the medium.
  • Drive Speed and Health Check. Dedicated modules assess the performance and condition of connected hard drives. The speed test measures transfer rates, while the health check reads diagnostic attributes to indicate wear or potential failure, helping users decide whether a drive is suitable for reuse before or after erasure.
  • Drive Characteristics Editing. The program includes functions for editing drive characteristics and parameters. This supports preparation and configuration tasks, such as adjusting settings that affect how the device is recognized and how erasure operations are carried out on supported hardware.
  • Boot Setup and Self-Booting Version. HDShredder includes tools for boot setup and a self-booting environment. Users can start the erasure process without the installed operating system, which is necessary when the target drive holds the system itself or when a clean, independent environment is required for sanitization.
  • Logging and Text Editor. Logging functions record operations and results for later review, and a text editor allows inspection or modification of related configuration and log files. These tools support documentation and troubleshooting during recurring erasure tasks.
  • Expanded Interface and Network Support. The Professional edition supports NVMe, eMMC, UFS, SAS and RAID devices, plus NetDisk and VNC operation. This extends erasure to modern storage types and enables remote or network-based workflows in demanding IT environments.
  • Licensing Editions. The product family includes Free, Basic, Standard, and Professional editions. Free and Basic use private licenses limited to non-business use, while Standard and Professional are available under Workplace and Volume licenses for commercial deployment, with each step adding security levels, standards, and documentation.

HDShredder was created by the German company Miray Software AG, which was founded in 1994 and is based in Munich. The program itself has been developed since the late 1990s and has been maintained continuously through numerous editions and updates. Miray Software specializes in storage management, data recovery, and data erasure tools, and the HDShredder product line grew out of that expertise in low-level disk access. The software is written primarily in C and C++, languages chosen for direct hardware access, performance, and portability across the supported platforms. Development has focused on supporting new storage interfaces and device types over time, from older SCSI and FireWire hardware to modern NVMe, eMMC, and UFS media, while preserving the physical-level erasure approach that defines the product.
