PicturesQ

PicturesQ — Free Download. Image viewer

PicturesQ is a cross-platform image viewer that opens folders directly without importing files into a library. It displays JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, RAW, SVG, PDF, and CBZ files, shows EXIF metadata beside the picture, and provides navigation with arrow keys. The free version includes folder browsing, grid view, and metadata inspection. The premium version adds side-by-side comparison, star ratings, custom tags, and a duplicate finder for exact and visually similar images.

  • Folder-first browsing. PicturesQ opens any directory on your system and immediately displays its image contents. No import step, no cataloguing delay, no background indexing. The sidebar shows the folder tree, and arrow keys move between files. This function eliminates the waiting period typical of library-based viewers.
  • Multiple format support. The program reads JPEG, PNG, WebP, animated GIF, camera RAW files, SVG vector graphics, PDF documents, and CBZ comic archives. PDFs and CBZ files are treated as browsable image sets, so pages become navigable frames. This removes the need for separate viewers for different file types.
  • EXIF and metadata display. Camera model, lens, ISO, shutter speed, aperture, dimensions, and file information appear in a side panel next to the image. The data updates as you navigate between files. Photographers can inspect shooting parameters without opening another application or leaving the current view.
  • Grid view. A single folder can be displayed as a grid of thumbnails instead of one full-screen image. This mode helps with quick scanning of a directory before switching to single-image inspection. Grid density adjusts to the window size.
  • Color picker. A built-in tool samples colors from any pixel in the displayed image. The picked value is shown in hexadecimal and RGB formats. Designers and retouchers use this to match colors across projects without launching a separate editor.
  • History feature. PicturesQ remembers folders and files you have opened during the session. You can return to a previous location without navigating the directory tree again. The history list is accessible from the toolbar.
  • MCP server for AI tools. The program exposes your local image library to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP-compatible AI assistants. The connection runs locally and securely. AI tools can query image metadata and folder contents without uploading files to external servers.
  • Side-by-side comparison. A premium function that places two images next to each other with a slider between them. You drag the slider to reveal more of one image or the other. This helps select the stronger frame from near-identical shots during culling.
  • Duplicate finder. A premium tool that scans folders for exact byte-level duplicates and visually similar images. Results are grouped so you can review and remove redundant files. The detection works on both identical copies and resized or recompressed versions.
  • Star ratings. A premium feature that assigns one to five stars to any image. Ratings are stored in a local database and persist across sessions. You can filter folders by rating to isolate the best shots.
  • Custom tags. A premium function for attaching text labels to images. Tags are searchable and can be combined with ratings for filtering. This supports organizing folders without moving or renaming files.
  • Update notifications. PicturesQ checks once a day for new versions and shows a dismissable notice in the toolbar. The check sends no information about you or your images. The program never downloads or installs updates automatically.
  • One-click license activation. After purchasing a premium license, the confirmation page includes an Activate in PicturesQ button. This button passes the key directly to the application. Manual key pasting remains available as before.
  • Single-instance behavior. On Windows and Linux, launching PicturesQ a second time brings the existing window to the front instead of opening a separate copy. This prevents duplicate processes and keeps the workspace organized.
  • Privacy-first operation. All processing happens locally. No tracking, no telemetry, no cloud sync. The MCP server also runs locally and does not transmit image data to external services.

PicturesQ was created by Thomas Quinlan, a developer based in the United States. The program draws inspiration from Xee3, an image viewer for macOS. Development started in 2023, and the first public release appeared in 2024. The application is written in Rust for performance-critical image decoding and folder navigation, with a user interface built using web technologies wrapped in a native shell. The cross-platform build targets Mac, Windows, and Linux. Updates arrive regularly, with recent additions including the MCP server, update notifications, and one-click license activation. The premium version costs $19 and unlocks comparison, tags, ratings, and duplicate detection.
