  • Folder-to-folder comparison. Select a before folder and an after folder, then run the comparison to see a complete breakdown of added, removed, modified, and identical files. This function targets build outputs, release directories, deployment packages, and any copied folder sets where tracking structural difference is mandatory.
  • Snapshot comparison. Create a snapshot of a directory at one moment, continue working, then compare that snapshot against the live folder or another snapshot. This mode addresses time-based audits, configuration drift detection, troubleshooting after failed updates, and verification that no unintended changes occurred over a maintenance window.
  • Snapshot file creation. Capture the exact state of any folder into a portable .wcsnap file. These snapshot files serve as baselines for later review, release references for team handoffs, or evidence that a directory remained untouched between two events.
  • Change classification. Every compared item receives a clear status label: added, removed, modified, or same. This classification removes guesswork during review and lets you immediately isolate new files, deleted content, altered entries, or unchanged assets within large directory structures.
  • Filtering and search. Narrow the result list by change type or use text search to locate specific files and folders inside the comparison output. This function keeps large comparisons manageable when you only care about removed configuration files, modified binaries, or a single known path.
  • Item details view. Select any file in the result list to inspect its full path, change status, and available metadata. The details panel shows context for each entry without leaving the main comparison window, which speeds up verification of individual differences.
  • Light and dark themes. Switch between light and dark interface themes to match your working environment. Dark theme reduces eye strain during long review sessions in low-light rooms, while light theme remains available for bright office conditions and screenshot clarity.
  • Snapshot on either side. Load a .wcsnap snapshot as the before source, the after source, or both sides of a comparison. This flexibility supports comparing two archived states against each other, a snapshot against the current live directory, or two live folders directly.
  • CSV report export. Export the comparison results to a CSV file that opens in Excel, Google Sheets, or any spreadsheet tool. The CSV includes paths, change categories, and file metadata so you can sort, filter, pivot, and archive the diff outside the application.
  • Standalone HTML report export. Generate a self-contained HTML file that contains the full comparison summary. The HTML report can be emailed, uploaded to a shared drive, or attached to a ticket, and recipients can review the results without installing WhatChanged.
  • Portable result handoff. Both CSV and HTML exports preserve the same session detail shown in the application: paths, change classifications, and key file metadata. This keeps external reviews faithful to the original comparison and prevents information loss when sharing findings with stakeholders.
  • No installation workflow for snapshots. Snapshot files remain readable by any copy of WhatChanged, so a snapshot created on one machine can be reviewed on another. Teams can share .wcsnap files through version control or file servers and maintain consistent baselines across different workstations.

Development of WhatChanged began in 2024 as a response to fragmented file comparison tools that mixed unnecessary complexity with missing snapshot capabilities. The initial release focused on a clean folder-to-folder comparison engine with reliable change detection and a distraction-free result list. Early feedback from build engineers and QA teams shaped the addition of filtering, search, and the item details panel before the first public version shipped.
