Secret key import. The program accepts Base32-encoded secret keys for new entries. A user can add an account by typing the secret and assigning a label. This function removes the need for a graphical setup wizard and supports manual entry of keys from service providers.
TOTP code generation. Time-based one-time passwords are computed according to RFC 6238. The current Unix time is divided by a 30-second period and combined with the stored secret using HMAC-SHA1. The resulting six-digit code refreshes automatically for each interval.
HOTP counter mode. Counter-based codes follow RFC 4226. The application increments a stored counter after each generated code. This mode works for services that require event-based authentication and do not rely on clock synchronization.
List of stored accounts. A command displays all added entries with their labels and current codes. The output remains readable in a terminal with monospaced formatting. This function gives a quick overview without launching a graphical interface.
Clipboard copy option. Generated codes can be sent directly to the system clipboard. The program invokes platform-specific clipboard utilities on Linux, macOS, or Windows. The code is not printed again after copying, reducing shoulder-surfing exposure.
Secure local storage. Secrets are kept in a local file under the user profile directory. File permissions are set to owner-only access during creation. The program does not transmit secrets over a network and does not require cloud synchronization.
Interactive add mode. The add command requests the secret and account name through prompt inputs. This mode avoids placing sensitive values into shell history. The user can paste the secret once and confirm before it is written to storage.
Delete account entry. An existing account can be removed by specifying its label or index. The program updates the storage file immediately after confirmation. Deleted entries no longer appear in the list output or in code generation queries.
Rename account label. Labels tied to stored secrets can be changed without deleting the entry. The rename operation preserves the original secret and algorithm settings. This function supports reorganizing accounts when a service changes its name.
Time drift indicator. The console can display the remaining seconds in the current TOTP period. This helps users detect clock offset problems before a code becomes invalid. The indicator updates with each generated code and works without network time checks.
Algorithm selection. The program supports SHA1, SHA256, and SHA512 as HMAC hash functions for both TOTP and HOTP. The algorithm is stored per account and applied during code calculation. This covers services that require stronger hashing than the default SHA1.
Digit count configuration. Code length can be set to six, seven, or eight digits when adding an account. The length is stored alongside the secret and algorithm. Services with non-standard OTP output remain compatible without modifying the core program.

The first version of 2faConsole appeared in 2023 as a personal project by a developer using the handle pxoqxo. The program was written in C# on the .NET platform. The author built a companion library called Pxoqxo.Otp2fa to handle all cryptographic operations without third-party dependencies. Releases target Windows, macOS, and Linux terminals through the .NET runtime. Development continues with a focus on terminal performance and RFC compliance.
