ViCalc

ViCalc — Free Download. Scientific calculator

ViCalc is a touch-typing optimized scientific calculator software for Windows and Linux. The application transforms a standard PC keyboard into a high-speed calculation workstation by assigning mathematical operations to the numeric keypad and the left-hand home row. Core capabilities include trigonometric functions, logarithmic operations, unit conversions, coordinate transformations, equation solvers, and calculation history management. The software supports both full-size desktop keyboards with a dedicated numpad and compact laptop layouts without one.

  • Touch-Typing Optimized Input. ViCalc divides input tasks between both hands to maximize calculation speed. The right hand operates the numeric keypad for digits and basic operators, while the left hand remains on the ASDF home row to trigger modifiers, exponents, and secondary or tertiary functions through Shift and Ctrl key combinations. This layout reduces hand movement and supports ten-finger typing for rapid formula entry without looking away from the screen.
  • Dual Keyboard Mode Support. The program includes two distinct input modes for different hardware configurations. Mode 1 is intended for desktop full-size keyboards with a dedicated numeric keypad, where the right hand controls numbers and the left hand accesses extended scientific functions. Mode 2, called the Home Row or Laptop Layout, adapts the same touch-typing principle to standard letter keys, enabling efficient operation on notebooks or compact keyboards without a numeric keypad.
  • Analog Key-Preselection. ViCalc was developed and tested with analog keyboards, such as the Wooting Two HE, which detect variable key pressure. When a key is pressed lightly, the program previews and highlights the corresponding function on the display before execution. A full key press executes the command, while releasing the key cancels the input without generating an error. Standard digital keyboards remain fully functional but do not display this preview behavior.
  • Expression Line and Calculation History. The interface shows the current mathematical expression on a dedicated input line as it is typed. After each calculation, the result is automatically appended to a running history log. Previously computed values can be reviewed and inserted into new expressions, allowing multi-step workflows without manually copying or remembering intermediate results.
  • Basic and Advanced Arithmetic. ViCalc covers fundamental operations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, parentheses for grouping, percentage calculations, percentage change between two values, reciprocal computation, absolute values, factorials, permutations, and combinations. These functions support both simple everyday math and more structured combinatorial or statistical work.
  • Trigonometric and Hyperbolic Functions. The calculator provides sine, cosine, tangent, and their inverse counterparts, along with hyperbolic sine, cosine, tangent, and inverse hyperbolic functions. Angle modes include degrees, radians, and gradians, with built-in conversion tools for switching between these units within a single expression or result display.
  • Logarithms, Powers, and Roots. Natural logarithms, base-10 logarithms, and logarithms with arbitrary bases are available. The software also handles power functions, square and higher-order roots, exponential calculations, and a selection of embedded scientific constants. These tools are suited for algebra, calculus support, and engineering computations.
  • Unit and Number Base Conversions. ViCalc performs coordinate conversion between rectangular and polar systems, sexagesimal to decimal degree conversion for geographic or astronomical data, and number base transformations across hexadecimal, decimal, octal, and binary formats. American Wire Gauge conversions for electrical engineering calculations are also included.
  • Solvers and Linear Systems. The program includes dedicated solvers for linear functions, quadratic equations, and systems of two linear equations with two unknowns. Ratio calculations are supported for proportional reasoning, and display formatting can be switched between scientific notation, fixed decimal places, and engineering notation to match the requirements of a specific task.
  • Cross-Platform Availability. ViCalc is distributed as free software for Windows and Linux operating systems. The program does not require installation of additional runtime environments and operates as a standalone executable. Both 64-bit and portable versions are available, making the tool suitable for use on laboratory machines, office computers, or portable USB drives without administrative privileges.

The development of ViCalc began in 2019 by German software engineer and mathematics enthusiast Dr. Stefan Kudaschov. The initial concept emerged from practical frustration with mouse-driven scientific calculators, which slowed down repeated numerical work in technical documentation and data analysis. Kudaschov wanted a tool that could match the speed of professional touch typists while offering the full depth of a scientific calculator.
