OpenROM

OpenROM — Free Download. ROM converter

OpenROM is a universal ROM conversion suite designed to replace multiple proprietary tools with a single desktop application. It supports over twenty conversion paths for formats including ISO, CHD, CSO, RVZ, and WBFS. The software features a gaming dashboard interface, batch processing, smart platform detection, and a fully functional command-line tool for automation.

  • Gaming Dashboard Interface. The main window uses a dark Flutter-based layout inspired by modern console dashboards. ROM files appear as cards with platform badges and real-time progress indicators. The interface provides quick access to conversion settings without requiring terminal commands or manual path configuration.
  • Complete Conversion Matrix. The application handles more than twenty conversion paths covering ISO, BIN, CUE, GDI, IMG, ECM, CHD, CSO, ZSO, XISO, RVZ, WIA, WBFS, and GCZ formats. Users can convert between these formats depending on the source and target compatibility. This reduces the need for separate utilities for each console ecosystem.
  • Smart Platform Detection. OpenROM identifies ROM types using magic byte analysis rather than file size guessing. It recognizes PlayStation 1, PlayStation 2, PSP, Xbox, GameCube, Wii, and Dreamcast images. Accurate detection prevents mismatched conversion attempts and corrupted output files.
  • Real CHD Header Parsing. The software reads actual CHD v4 and v5 headers to determine whether a disc image is CD or DVD based. This approach avoids assumptions made from file extensions or sizes. The result is correct compression settings and proper handling of different optical media types.
  • Automatic CUE Generation. For standalone BIN files missing a CUE sheet, OpenROM generates one automatically. It assigns the correct track mode, including MODE1, MODE2, and AUDIO tracks. This feature restores usability for disc images that were extracted incompletely or without accompanying metadata.
  • Integrity Verification. After conversion to CHD format, the program runs chdman verify to confirm data integrity. The verification step catches corruption that may occur during compression or write operations. Users receive a clear pass or fail result for each processed file.
  • Batch Processing. Whole folders can be dropped into the queue for simultaneous conversion. The application processes each file sequentially with live terminal logging showing current operations and timestamps. Large collections do not require manual one-by-one handling.
  • Real-time Terminal Log. A built-in log panel displays live process output with timestamps during conversions. The panel slides up automatically when a job starts and provides detailed information about each step. Users can monitor progress and diagnose issues without opening a separate terminal window.
  • Drag and Drop Support. Files and folders can be dragged directly into the application window from the operating system file manager. The interface accepts both individual ROM files and directories containing multiple images. This simplifies workflow for users managing large libraries.
  • Full Headless CLI. The openrom-core component provides a complete command-line interface for scripting and automation. It communicates with the Flutter frontend through IPC and can run independently for server use or batch scripts. Automation pipelines can integrate OpenROM without graphical interaction.
  • Theme System. Built-in themes include Gaming Dashboard, Cyberpunk, Terminal, and Minimal variants. Custom themes can be created via JSON files and loaded into the application. Theme changes apply to the entire interface, including cards, badges, and progress elements.
  • No Telemetry. The software makes zero network requests during normal operation. No analytics, tracking, or remote data collection is performed. All processing remains local to the user's machine.

OpenROM development began as a response to fragmented ROM conversion tools that handled only one or two formats each. The project was created by the M5Devs team and first released in 2023. Version 2.5.0 introduced a complete Flutter UI rewrite, replacing the earlier interface with the current dashboard design. The application is written primarily in Dart using the Flutter framework, while the command-line core and conversion logic rely on C++ components and existing tools like chdman. Later releases added magic byte detection, CHD header parsing, the theme system, Android support via Termux, and ARM64 builds for Linux. The project maintains a GPL v3 license with a Commons Clause restriction on commercial bundling.
