DecryptPDFs

DecryptPDFs — Free Download. Bulk PDF password remover

DecryptPDFs is a Windows utility for locating and removing password protection from PDF files in batch mode. Point the application at a folder, such as the Downloads directory, and it scans every PDF to identify password-protected documents. The program strips that protection automatically using passwords it has already learned or one supplied by the user. It includes a built-in Password Manager where every successful password gets saved automatically, encrypted at rest with Windows DPAPI and tied to the Windows login. The tool becomes faster with continued use. It also supports removing PDF permission restrictions, not just open-passwords. Output options include overwriting in place or writing files with a prefix or suffix. A native Windows installer provides right-click and Send to Explorer integration.

  • Recursive folder scanning. The function walks through a selected folder and all its subfolders to find every PDF file. It builds a complete list of documents for processing, which prevents the need to add files from multiple locations manually.
  • Batch processing of selected files. The user can select a group of individual PDF files from any location. The program processes this batch in one operation, applying the same decryption and output rules to each file without further input.
  • Automatic password learning. When a password successfully decrypts a PDF, the program saves that password to its internal manager. This learning happens without a separate save step, and the password becomes available for all future decryption attempts.
  • Most-likely-first password trying. Stored passwords are ordered by their success count. During a scan, the program tries passwords that have worked most often in the past before attempting less successful ones, which reduces average decryption time.
  • Password Manager with DPAPI encryption. All saved passwords are encrypted using Windows Data Protection API. The encryption is tied to the current Windows user account, so other users on the same machine cannot read the stored passwords.
  • Windows credential gating. Access to view or manage saved passwords requires re-confirmation of the Windows login. The user can unlock the Password Manager with a password, PIN, or Windows Hello, depending on system configuration.
  • Masked password display. Saved passwords appear as asterisks in the manager interface. A manual reveal action is required to see the actual characters, which protects sensitive data from shoulder surfing or screen sharing.
  • Permission restriction removal. The program removes security restrictions such as printing, copying, or editing limitations from PDF files. This applies even to files that do not have an open-password but still block certain actions.
  • Overwrite or rename output modes. Decrypted files can replace the original encrypted PDFs in place. Alternatively, the user can configure a prefix or suffix for new files, keeping the originals untouched and creating separate decrypted copies.
  • Live progress indication. A status bar shows the current file being processed and the overall progress of the scan. The user sees which files are encrypted, which passwords are being tried, and which files have been decrypted.
  • Manual stop command. Pressing the S key during a batch operation stops the process at the next safe point. Files already decrypted remain processed, and the program reports which files were completed before the stop.
  • No admin rights installation. The installer writes only to the user registry hive. This allows installation in corporate environments or on locked-down Windows machines where standard users cannot get administrative privileges.

The DecryptPDFs project was started by developer rukpat. The initial public release appeared on GitHub in 2024. The program was created to address a personal workflow problem: the developer regularly received password-protected PDF statements from banks, brokers, insurance companies, and utility providers. The repetitive task of finding the correct password for each file led to the idea of an automated tool that learns passwords over time.
