Edge-Drop

Edge-Drop — Free Download. Clipboard Shelf

Edge-Drop is a clipboard shelf and file-transfer hub for Windows 10 and 11. It anchors to your screen edge as a slim, always-on-top panel instead of using hotkeys or pop-up history windows. Move your cursor near the edge and the shelf springs open, then drag files or images straight out into whatever app you are already using. It keeps clipboard history with text, links, images, and files, plus quick-preview flyouts, duplicate detection, incognito mode, auto-delete timers, file stacks you can merge and split, a top-edge dock, multi-monitor support, 31 languages, and encrypted local storage.

  • Zero-click edge hover. Edge-Drop runs as a frameless, transparent, always-on-top window anchored at the left or right screen edge. When collapsed, it is fully click-through, so the desktop remains usable. The hot-zone height can be set to 25, 40, or 60 percent of the screen, and the blade height ranges from 50 to 80 percent. An Edge Trigger Proximity Slider calibrates the sensor region from 1px to 7px, and the trigger strip alignment can be placed at Top, Center, or Bottom relative to the shelf. A subtle 1.5px hairline gradient pulse appears on the screen edge when the cursor touches a misaligned vertical position, guiding the user toward the shelf. The panel can also dock horizontally along the top of the screen up to 1080px wide.
  • Configurable global toggle shortcut. A tactile keycap hotkey recorder lets the user change the shelf toggle shortcut, which defaults to Alt+C. It shows a live modifier keycap preview, instant clear and reset buttons, and non-blocking key capture. Collision detection updates the Electron globalShortcut dynamically with automatic resolution and instant toast feedback. Window focusability toggles only during active key recording, so normal shelf clicks never steal operating system focus.
  • Shelf search. A type-to-filter search box sits inside the shelf as a full row on the vertical blade and as a centered box on the horizontal dock. It filters retained history from 100 to 1000 items, with 250 as the default, adjustable in Settings. Typing does not move focus from the active application, and clicking a result pastes straight into it. Escape clears the query, and closing the shelf resets the search. Elastic filter chips and the emoji category bar use a rubber-band track with momentum glide and settle animation, keyboard navigation, and reduced-motion support. A Colors tab collects copied color codes such as #ff4757 or rgb values as swatch cards painted with the actual color.
  • Multi-format clipboard engine. The engine captures plain text, URLs, rich HTML, raw images, spreadsheets, and multi-file selections. Every file type and any file size can be ingested because file cards store disk references rather than file bytes, so a 1 KB text file and a multi-GB video both appear instantly and drag back out intact. Win32 FileNameW and HDROP parsing through PowerShell bypasses Electron's single-file limit. The watcher respects password-manager and dictation-tool privacy flags with case-insensitive matching. Smart deduplication bumps hit counts, triggers a subtle glowing copy flare, and moves the item to the top. Incognito mode suspends polling with one click. Auto-delete timers offer Never, 1 hour, 6 hours, 24 hours, and 7 days, plus clear unpinned on restart.
  • Universal native OS drag and drop vault. A background pre-staging bridge exposes a call that runs on hover or pointerdown, so temporary file handles and pastel vector drag ghosts are ready before the mouse drag begins. Returning dragged items onto the shelf is a clean no-op, and the capturing preload drop filter prevents accidental re-ingestion, card duplication, usage count increments, or card splitting. A small pointer-movement guard separates clicks from drags across text and link cards. Item usage counts and move-to-top reordering are gated strictly to drops that land in external applications such as Word, Photoshop, Discord, or Explorer. Original filenames are preserved across clipboard transfers, drag operations, and disk exports. Window Z-band is temporarily demoted during active drags for smooth drag-out into Windows desktop software. Text, web images, links, and local files can also be dragged directly into the shelf.
  • Fluid collections and stacks. Copying multiple items automatically groups them into 3D card stacks of up to 10. Collapsed file bundles show wide presentation cards with folder-silhouette masks and category-specific pastel vector badges. Animated GIF streaming through the internal edgelocal protocol provides full playback inside stack tiles. Expanding and collapsing bundles is seamless, and clicking anywhere outside an open stack folds it back without layout shifting. Any shelf item can be dragged onto an open Preview Flyout to stack and merge. Stacks expand with a single click on the Expand action button or Preview Flyout, and a sub-item can be dragged to the screen edge or ungrouped with a button to split it back out.
  • Segmented settings architecture. Settings are organized into three emoji-free tabs: Behaviour, Position, and Appearance. A fixed top tab bar stays stationary while controls scroll independently underneath, and each category section keeps its own scroll position across tab switches. Native CSS active tab styling avoids layout projection glitches. A 5 percent magnetic tick slider tracks continuously at 60 or 120 fps during drag, with visual tick dashes, a live percentage badge, quick-jump buttons, and magnetic snapping on release. Changing Stick position or Display monitor opens a 1.75s temporary interactive preview window. Heavy backdrop-filter blur calls are replaced with solid or semi-transparent dark fills, removing CPU rasterization overhead.
  • Silent background auto-updates. Updates use electron-updater with GitHub releases for background downloading, live progress streaming, and a single-click Restart to Update button. An interactive floating update badge shows download percentages, transferred byte counts, and one-click restart on the shelf without obstructing layout. A monochrome banner sits at the top of the scrollable content area across all category tabs, styled as a dark-mode 4 percent white card fill with a 12 percent white border and a high-contrast white button. Three modes are available: Automatic, Notify me, and Off. Manual checks behave the same in every mode, and skipped versions re-prompt on the next launch. Microsoft Store MSIX builds come from isolated pipelines and contain no self-update code.
  • Offline rich URL previews and one-click launch. Copied URLs are parsed automatically to extract the website domain name, page title, and site favicon without external API calls. Apple-inspired URL cards display the full link destination beneath the webpage title with a domain tag, custom site favicon, and humanized headline. Clicking the external link launcher button on URL cards or flyouts opens links in the default web browser, and clicking outside dismisses the flyout without pasting. Dynamic relative timestamp aging uses an active 5-second interval timer that updates card timestamps from just now to 1m to 1h without requiring filter tab switching.
  • Complete 31-language internationalization. Fully translated dictionaries cover 31 global languages with complete section and key coverage, including English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Hindi, Arabic, Bengali, Turkish, Vietnamese, Polish, Dutch, Swedish, Indonesian, Ukrainian, Greek, Czech, Romanian, Hungarian, Danish, Finnish, Thai, Hebrew, Norwegian, and Persian. Native right-to-left support automatically mirrors text direction and layout for Arabic, Hebrew, and Persian. The language selector anchors System Default at index 0 and auto-scrolls to bring the active language into view on open, with audio dial ticks during dropdown item hover and scroll.
  • Performance and reliability systems. No backdrop-filter blur is used, so solid fills keep opening and scrolling at 60 or 120 fps. RAM stays around 130 to 160 MB because large text entries spill to disk payload files, images stream as 240px thumbnails through a custom protocol, and the V8 heap is capped at 512 MB. Battery-aware cursor polling reduces CPU draw on laptops. A multi-monitor engine with versioned display cache remembers the chosen monitor across reboots and mixed-DPI setups. Fullscreen Direct3D game detection suppresses edge hover while leaving the desktop and home screen unaffected. Launch-at-login self-heals quoted registry paths across updates, and a sleep/wake guard pauses clipboard polling and re-seeds on unlock.
  • Text rendering and audio feedback. Text renders with native Windows ClearType instead of forced grayscale smoothing, which is most noticeable on 4K monitors. Idle-time warmups remove the hitch on the first shelf open and first emoji open after launch, and emoji categories load in batches, skip off-screen rows, and preload on hover. A zero-asset Web Audio engine synthesizes tactile feedback: mechanical dial ticks from 1800Hz to 900Hz when sliding position controls, a dual-stage downward pitch sweep for deletions, resonant pops for toggle switches, and crisp clicks for buttons. A global sound effects toggle sits in Settings, on by default, with an eager AudioContext unlock on first interaction.
  • Selective history clearing and file iconography. History can be cleared in preset time windows: last 1 hour, 6 hours, 24 hours, or all. Clearing while viewing a category tab such as Images, Files, Links, or Text, or while a search query is active, deletes only unpinned items in that view, leaving the rest of the history intact. A custom 3D pastel SVG icon suite covers folders, code, documents, spreadsheets, PDFs, presentations, audio, video, archives, and executables across clipboard cards, file bundles, preview flyouts, and OLE drag ghosts. Copied tabular cells from Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets are preserved as structured text or HTML to prevent false screenshot misclassification, and Windows Snipping Tool captures are named automatically as Screenshot YYYY-MM-DD HH.MM.SS.png.

Edge-Drop was created in 2023 and is developed by an independent team of Windows desktop engineers who focus on clipboard and file-transfer tooling. The application is written in TypeScript and JavaScript on the Electron framework, with native Win32 and PowerShell components for clipboard parsing, fullscreen detection, and registry management. The project is distributed as a free application through the official website edgedrop.app, the Microsoft Store as an MSIX package, and GitHub releases as an NSIS installer. Development follows a local-first privacy model: clipboard data stays on the device, no account or login is required, and no telemetry is collected.
