Fontelle

Fontelle — Free Download. SoundFont DAW

Fontelle is a free digital audio workstation built for Linux first. Load an .sf2 and every loop point, envelope, filter and mapping in it is yours to edit. Around that sits a full studio in one small native binary: arrangement and piano roll, a mixer with built-in effects, a synthesiser with 338 presets, a drum machine, an autotune, audio recording, and CLAP and LV2 plugin hosting. No account, no cloud, no fees.

  • SoundFont parameter override. The sampler loads Standard MIDI File SoundFont banks and exposes every internal parameter as a real-time editable value. Loop points, amplitude and filter envelopes, LFO settings, the modulation matrix, key and velocity mapping, and tuning are all detached from the file's original values and become properties of the project. Each override is automatable from the arrangement, so a static General MIDI bank turns into raw material for sound design rather than a fixed instrument.
  • Arrangement timeline. The main composition view holds lanes for MIDI clips, audio clips and automation clips. It supports looping, clip stretch and cut operations, fades, and a blade tool for slicing. Prefabs let one set of notes be placed in many positions without duplication. A tempo map with tempo changes, time signature events and a metronome drives the transport, which offers loop ranges and both song mode and clip mode playback.
  • Piano roll editor. A dedicated note editor provides draw, paint, select and delete tools. Snapping ranges from a full bar down to 1/32 notes, includes triplets, and can be switched off entirely. A velocity lane and a property lane handle per-note dynamics, ghost notes show surrounding context, and an arpeggiator generates patterns. Legato joining via Ctrl+L, slides and pitch bends are supported, and a per-note channel assignment allows multi-instrument clips inside one part.
  • Flopsynth synthesiser. An integrated subtractive and hybrid synth with three oscillators offering unison, sync and FM modes, plus a sub oscillator and a noise section. It includes two filters with drive, separate amplitude and filter envelopes, LFOs, a modulation matrix and macro controls. The instrument carries its own effect chain and ships with 338 factory presets organised on shelves such as Bass, Keys, Pads, Leads, Sync & FM, World, Cinematic, Lo-Fi & Tape and Modular.
  • Drum machine. A percussion module built on physically modelled resonator bodies instead of sample playback. Kits are synthesised in real time and routed to their own dedicated bus, giving independent processing and mixing separate from the main instrument channels. The piano roll labels its keys with drum names such as Closed Hat, Snare, Clap and Tom Low, making pattern programming direct.
  • Mixer and routing. Track channels, sends, flexible routing and a master bus with a brickwall limiter form the mixing section. Each track holds an insert chain with wet/dry control and delay compensation. Track presets are available, including sixteen shipped vocal chains. Channel strips show live meters, and the selected strip exposes its input, output and insert chain in a side column.
  • Built-in effect families. A set of native processors covers Utility, EQ with a spectrum display, Filter, Compressor with external sidechain input, Gate, Distortion, Bitcrush, Soften, Chorus, Delay and Reverb. Every knob on every effect is automatable from the arrangement, so effect parameters can change over time alongside notes and audio.
  • Tune autotune module. A pitch correction processor with a keyboard-driven scale definition, selectable presets and a colour control that shapes the character of the correction. It operates on audio input or recorded material and integrates with the track insert chain.
  • Plugin hosting. Fontelle hosts CLAP and LV2 instruments and effects on Linux, including each plugin's own editor window, with plugin state saved inside the project. Every plugin picker supports favourites, and scanning covers the standard system locations plus any additional folders the user adds. VST2 and VST3 formats are not hosted in the shipped binary.
  • Audio recording and import. Audio files can be imported, played back and recorded with input monitoring. A clip editor handles trimming and adjustment, and offline rendering exports the project to WAV. Audio is stored inside project bundles, so a project reopens with its material attached.
  • MIDI input and file handling. Live MIDI input works with hot-plugging and offers per-device velocity curves, transpose and channel filtering. MIDI recording captures performances, MIDI files can be imported, and .fsc files from FL Studio scores are supported.
  • Project management and safety. Full undo and redo covers editing operations, autosave and backups protect against data loss, and projects are stored as bundles named Name.fontelle folders that reopen with their audio. The start menu lists recent projects and provides New project and Open a project actions.
  • Self-update mechanism. On launch the program checks the releases API and, when a newer version exists, shows an Install update button. That button downloads the release archive, verifies it against the published SHA256SUMS file, and swaps the binary in place. If the location is not writable, it opens the release page for manual installation. The check is the only network request the program makes and can be disabled in Settings.
  • Interface rendering. The application uses a custom GPU-drawn interface built on wgpu and vello, with dark and light themes. The Linux download is 9.2 MB, and the program runs as a small native binary without a runtime or account requirement.

Fontelle is developed by Fopull LLC and is dual-licensed under MIT OR Apache-2.0. The first public release is version 0.1.0, an early access build that already functions as a complete studio while a longer design list remains ahead. The program is written in Rust from top to bottom, with a custom GPU-drawn interface implemented using wgpu and vello. Development targets Linux on x86_64 as the primary platform, while Windows on x86_64 and macOS on Apple Silicon and Intel are produced by the same release workflow with the full test suite run on each, though those builds receive less exercise. On Windows and macOS, plugin editors are not shown and LV2 plugins are not hosted, while CLAP plugins still load and play.
