Morok

Morok — Free Download. Private Messenger

Morok is a private messenger where your account belongs to you, not a corporation. There is no phone number, email, or password required. Identity is an Ed25519 key pair restored from a 24-word recovery phrase, and the server never holds the secret half. All messages are end-to-end encrypted by default using X25519 and XChaCha20-Poly1305. The network is federated, meaning independent relay servers exchange messages, and anyone can run their own relay. Morok also includes Morok Mail, a private email address (@morok.email) inside the app with aliases you can pause or permanently kill. The service is available on Android, Windows, and the web, with the web client being open source under the MIT license. Morok is currently in open beta.

  • No phone, no email. Sign up with no personal data at all. Your account is 24 secret words that only you know. Nobody can find you by phone number because the system never learns it. This removes the most common tracking vector used by mainstream messengers.
  • End-to-end encryption. Every message is encrypted on your device before it leaves. Only the recipient can decrypt it. The server sees nothing but meaningless bytes. Encryption is not a setting you turn on per chat; it is how the protocol works from the ground up.
  • Zero history. The server keeps no message history. Once you have read a message, it is gone from the server. Reinstall the app and nothing comes back. No admin can hand it over because there is nothing to hand over. This limits data exposure in case of a server breach.
  • Disappearing messages. Every message has a lifespan. After an hour, a day, or a week, it is erased on both sides, leaving no trace in the app. This feature reduces the risk of old conversations being recovered from device storage or backups.
  • Private groups. Invite-only, through a link from the admin. The group name and its messages are encrypted with a key only members hold. The server sees neither the name, nor the members, nor a word of the conversation. This protects group metadata from relay operators.
  • Anonymous accounts. You can use Morok with no username at all. Such an account cannot be searched for; it can only be reached through a link or QR code you hand out yourself. Stay away for 7 days and an anonymous account is erased entirely.
  • Dead man's switch. If you stop opening the app for long enough, a message you prepared in advance is delivered automatically to the person you chose. This is used for passing on passwords, crypto keys, or instructions to people who matter.
  • Tor access. Morok has an official .onion address. Use it through Tor Browser and your provider sees neither what you write nor the fact that you use Morok at all. This hides the act of using the messenger from network observers.
  • Federated servers. Instead of a single server someone can switch off, there is a network of servers that talk to each other. Anyone can run their own, and people on different servers chat as if they were on one. This removes a single point of failure or censorship.
  • Sealed sender. The sender's identity is encrypted inside the message. The relay sees only a recipient and a blob of bytes. Who sent it is known only to whoever can decrypt it. The fact of delivery is still visible to the relay unless Tor or your own server is used.
  • Local contacts. Save the people you talk to under names only you see. The list lives on your device and the server knows nothing about it. You can also filter who is allowed to message you, reducing unwanted contact.
  • PIN lock. Lock the app behind a PIN. If your phone ends up in the wrong hands, nobody opens your chats without it. The keys are encrypted with Argon2id. Without a PIN, the keys sit in device storage in the clear, so setting one is advised.
  • Morok Mail. A private email address (@morok.email) inside the app, with aliases you can pause or permanently kill. Mail is stored on your device, and end-to-end encryption works between Morok users. This extends private communication beyond instant messaging.
  • No ads, no trackers. Morok shows no ads, collects no behavioural metrics, and hands nothing to third parties. There is no business model built on your data because no data is kept. This removes commercial surveillance from the communication channel.

Morok was created by a small independent development team focused on privacy engineering and decentralized systems. Development began in 2022, with the first public beta released in 2023. The project is written primarily in Rust for the relay server and core cryptographic operations, while the web client uses JavaScript and WebAssembly. The Android app is built with Kotlin.
