MUSHclient

MUSHclient — Free Download. MUD client

MUSHclient is a 32-bit MUD and telnet client that supports ANSI color, macros, triggers, built-in timers, MXP, MCCP, proxy connections, sound playback, and scripting in multiple languages. It handles multiple worlds at the same time and keeps large scrollback buffers for each session. Plugins and miniwindows extend what the client can display and automate during text-based multi-user dungeon games.

  • Aliases. Aliases are command shorthands that let a player type a short word or abbreviation instead of a longer command. When the alias is entered, the client replaces it with the full command before sending it to the MUD server. Aliases can also accept arguments and pass them into scripts, which makes repeated actions faster and reduces typing during play.
  • Triggers. Triggers watch the incoming text from the MUD for specific patterns or keywords. When a match occurs, the client can automatically run a command, change the color of the line, play a sound, or call a script function. Triggers are central to automating responses to combat messages, chat, and other repeated events in the game.
  • Timers. Timers send commands or run scripts at fixed intervals. A timer can repeat continuously or fire once after a delay. Players use timers for actions such as checking health, casting spells, or sending periodic messages. Each timer can be enabled, disabled, and edited without restarting the client.
  • Keypad navigation. Keypad navigation maps the numeric keypad to movement directions such as north, south, east, and west. Pressing a key on the keypad sends the matching movement command to the MUD. This gives a fast way to move through rooms without typing direction names.
  • Tab completion. Tab completion fills in a word based on text that appeared recently in the MUD output. When the player presses the Tab key while typing, the client searches recent lines and completes the current word. This reduces typing errors when entering long names of items, characters, or locations.
  • Speed-walking. Speed-walking lets a player type a compact string such as 4n 5w to move multiple rooms in a row. The client expands each part of the string into separate movement commands and sends them in sequence. This makes long routes through a game world faster to travel.
  • Auto-say. Auto-say adds a chosen prefix, usually the word say, in front of everything typed into the command bar. This turns normal typing into in-character speech without extra keystrokes. The feature can be turned on and off while playing.
  • Miniwindows. Miniwindows are scriptable graphical elements drawn above, below, or beside the MUD text. They can show health bars, experience bars, maps, inventory information, quest details, and action buttons with cooldowns. Miniwindows support rectangles, ellipses, lines, curves, text in any installed font, PNG and BMP images, and mouse events such as mouse-over, mouse-down, and mouse-up.
  • Sound support. Sound support plays up to ten sound files at the same time using DirectSound technology from DirectX. Sounds can serve as background music, ambient effects, warnings, or battle audio. Each sound can be played at a different volume and panned between the left and right speakers.
  • Chat system. The built-in chat system works with both MudMaster and zChat protocols. It can make and receive chat calls to other compatible clients, including other copies of MUSHclient. The chat system can send files, snoop output, send commands, and be controlled through scripts.
  • Scripting. Scripting lets triggers, timers, aliases, and other events call functions written in JScript, Lua, PerlScript, PhpScript, Python, or VBScript. More than 410 script functions and properties can be called by scripting routines, with over 300 additional functions specific to Lua. Recent versions support in-line scripting, so triggers, aliases, and timers can make decisions without a separate script file. A built-in editor allows writing scripts inside the program and offers quick access to help entries for all script functions.
  • Plugins. Plugins are related groups of triggers, timers, aliases, scripts, and variables that add functionality to a world. More than a dozen plugins come with MUSHclient, and more can be downloaded from the plugins web page and from other authors. Plugins can be installed and removed without changing the main program.
  • XML file format. World files, plugins, triggers, aliases, timers, and variables are saved in industry-standard XML format. This makes the files readable and editable with external tools. Triggers, aliases, and other items can be copied and pasted from one world to another.
  • Multiple worlds support. Dozens of worlds can be open at the same time. A single command can be sent to all open worlds or only to selected ones. Each world keeps its own settings, output buffer, and command history.
  • High-capacity buffers. Each world can store up to 500,000 lines of recent output in memory and remember the last 5,000 commands typed. A search facility helps find individual items in the scrollback and command history. This supports long play sessions without losing earlier text.
  • MXP and MCCP support. MUSHclient supports Mud eXtension Protocol and MUD Client Compression Protocol versions 1 and 2. MXP adds richer text formatting and interactive elements from the server, while MCCP compresses data to reduce bandwidth use during play.
  • Proxy server support. Connections can be routed through Socks 4 and Socks 5 proxy servers. This allows players to connect from networks that require a proxy or to hide the origin address of the connection.

MUSHclient was created by Nick Gammon and is distributed as freeware. The program was written in C++ for speed and a compact installed size of around 11 MB, plus space for world configurations and downloaded plugins. It runs under Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP, Vista, and 7, and also runs under Wine on Linux. Development has continued through version 4.94, with support provided through the MUSHclient forum. The client supports MUD games, which are text-based multi-player role-playing games, and most MUDs are free to play. A list of over 1,000 MUDs is available at The MUD Connector.
