Process Lasso

Process Lasso — Free Download. CPU optimization

Process Lasso is a Windows utility for process priority optimization and system automation. It uses ProBalance technology to maintain PC responsiveness during high CPU loads by dynamically adjusting process priorities and CPU affinities. The software provides persistent rules for CPU cores, power plan automation, and advanced watchdog actions, giving precise control over how applications consume system resources.

  • ProBalance. This algorithm maintains system responsiveness during high CPU usage by temporarily lowering the priority of background processes that are consuming excessive CPU time. It prevents foreground applications from becoming unresponsive when a single process tries to monopolize the processor. ProBalance works dynamically, making adjustments only when needed and restoring original priorities after the load subsides.
  • Persistent CPU Affinities. This function allows assigning specific CPU cores to any process so that the assignment remains active every time the application launches. Users can restrict a process to run only on selected cores, which reduces cache thrashing and can improve overall performance on multi-core systems. Affinity rules are stored and applied automatically without manual intervention.
  • Persistent Priority Classes. This feature sets a fixed priority level for chosen processes, such as High, Above Normal, Normal, Below Normal, or Idle. The priority class determines how much CPU time a process receives relative to others. Persistent settings ensure that a process always starts with the desired priority, which is useful for latency-sensitive applications or for keeping background tools from interfering with active work.
  • Efficiency Mode Control. This function manages Windows 11 Efficiency Mode, which marks processes as not performance critical. Efficiency Mode reduces the priority and power consumption of designated processes, helping them stay out of the way of foreground tasks. Process Lasso can apply this mode persistently to specific applications, ensuring they do not compete heavily for CPU resources.
  • CPU Limiter. This tool dynamically reduces the CPU usage of a process when it reaches a defined threshold. Unlike permanent priority changes, the CPU limiter acts temporarily to cap the processor time a process can consume during bursts of activity. This prevents runaway processes from overheating the system or starving other applications of CPU time.
  • Instance Balancer. This function distributes CPU core usage among multiple running instances of the same application. When several copies of a program are active, Instance Balancer assigns each copy to different CPU cores to avoid contention. This improves throughput for applications that are not optimized for multi-instance execution on many-core processors.
  • Limit Instances. This rule restricts the number of concurrent instances a process may have in a user session. When the limit is reached, new launches are blocked or terminated based on the configured action. This prevents accidental or malicious spawning of too many copies of a program that could exhaust memory or CPU resources.
  • Disallowed Processes. This feature immediately terminates any process that matches user-defined criteria, such as name, path, or signature. It acts as a security and resource management measure, blocking unwanted executables from running at all. The rule can be set to log the event or silently end the process depending on user preference.
  • Power Profile Automation. This module switches Windows power plans based on system state or running processes. For example, IdleSaver activates a low-power plan when the computer is idle, while another rule can switch to a high-performance plan when a specific application is detected. This automates energy management without manual switching.
  • Keep Awake. This function prevents the PC from sleeping for a specified duration or while selected processes are running. It overrides system sleep timers to keep the machine active during long tasks such as downloads, rendering, or backups. The setting can be temporary, timer-based, or tied to the presence of certain applications.
  • Advanced Watchdog Rules. These rules perform a specified action when a matched process reaches a threshold of resource consumption, such as CPU percentage, memory usage, or response time. Actions include terminating the process, changing its priority, restarting it, or executing a custom command. This provides automated handling of misbehaving software.
  • Configuration Profiles. This feature allows creating and switching between multiple sets of rules and settings. Users can define separate profiles for gaming, work, or server environments and apply them instantly. Profiles store all process rules, affinities, priorities, and power settings in a single switchable container.

Process Lasso development began in 2005 by Jeremy Collake, the founder of Bitsum Technologies. The program was created to address the problem of Windows system unresponsiveness caused by CPU-bound processes. Initially written in C and C++, the core service and GUI were designed for minimal overhead and maximum compatibility with Windows NT-based systems.
