Tag That Photo

Tag That Photo — Free Download. Face tagging

Tag That Photo is a Windows desktop app for organizing photo collections by tagging people in images. The program scans local folders, detects faces automatically, and helps assign names to each person. It supports JPG, PNG, TIF, HEIC, and Raw formats. The software preserves metadata and keeps photos on the user’s computer rather than in the cloud. It also imports existing tags from Picasa and Fotobounce. The first 30 days are free.

  • Local folder scanning. The program points to any folder or partition on the computer where images are stored. After selecting a directory, it automatically detects all photographs that contain human faces. The scanning process indexes files without moving or altering them. Supported formats include JPG, PNG, TIF, HEIC, and Raw. This function forms the base for all further tagging operations and keeps the original folder structure intact.
  • Face recognition. Powered by Applied Recognition's patented engine, the software finds and recognizes faces faster and with fewer errors than Microsoft and Google solutions. It highlights each detected face and groups similar faces together. Users can adjust detection accuracy, CPU task loading, and logging level. The recognition parameters can be tweaked to match hardware capabilities and project size.
  • Name assignment. After faces are detected, the program lists them for review. The user adds names to the corresponding persons. Each name is linked to a face and stored in the internal database. This step converts raw detections into a searchable, organized library of people. The process works for hundreds or thousands of images at once.
  • Metadata writing. The paid version appends tags and names directly to the image metadata section. This means tags travel with the files and remain readable by other programs. In the free trial period, tags are kept in an internal database instead. Writing metadata ensures that information is not lost when files are moved or opened in different editors.
  • Tag importing. Users who already spent hours tagging photos in Picasa or Fotobounce can import their existing tags into Tag That Photo. The program reads the old tag structure and merges it with the new library. Additional import options are being added over time. This function protects previous work and avoids retagging from scratch.
  • Privacy control. The user decides where photos are stored, managed, and shared. The program works with local Windows folders and does not require cloud uploads. Personal images remain on the user's drive. This design gives full control over who can access the photo collection and where the data lives.
  • Library scaling. The processor handles hundreds or thousands of photos without slowing down. The lightning-fast engine keeps organization efforts moving along as the collection grows. Memory and CPU usage can be adjusted through detection settings. Large family archives and professional collections remain manageable.
  • Search and retrieval. Once people are tagged, photos can be retrieved by name. The search feature filters the library by tagged persons. This turns an unstructured folder of images into a database where any individual can be found in seconds. Retrieval works across the entire scanned library.
  • Format support. The free plan works with common image types but excludes Raw and HEIC. Paid plans add support for Raw and HEIC files. This covers modern smartphone photos and professional camera output. The program reads these formats during scanning and face detection.
  • Name limits by plan. The free plan allows a maximum of 10 names. Personal Lite supports up to 100 names. Premium and Family plans remove the limit on names. This structure lets small projects start without payment and scale up when the tagging project grows.
  • Multi-computer licensing. The Family Plan provides three licenses for multiple computers. A family tagging project can be spread across several machines. Each license activates the full feature set, including all supported image types and unlimited names. This suits households digitizing old photo albums together.
  • Tag visibility in File Explorer. Tags written to metadata appear in Windows File Explorer as person names. To display faces, other software must read XMP tags. The program writes the necessary metadata so that file properties show the tagged people. This connects the internal library with the operating system's file view.

Tag That Photo was created by Tag That Photo Inc., a company known for its patented face recognition engine. The program is the successor of Fotobounce, a photo management tool that also focused on face tagging. Development of Tag That Photo started in the late 2010s, with the official website and product releases appearing around 2019 and 2020. The software is written in C++ and built for the Windows desktop platform, which allows direct access to local file systems and metadata. The team behind the program includes engineers specializing in computer vision and image metadata handling. Their goal was to move face recognition from cloud services to the user's own computer.
