Whisprtypr

Whisprtypr — Free Download. Voice Typing tool

Whisprtypr is a local-first voice typing application for Windows and macOS that converts spoken language into polished text inserted directly at the cursor position. The program operates through global hotkeys, supports push-to-talk and toggle recording modes, and processes speech using local Whisper models or optional cloud providers. Users can dictate into any text field without switching applications. Additional capabilities include AI-powered formatting, custom vocabulary replacement, file transcription, voice commands, searchable history, and system tray integration for background operation.

  • Dictate anywhere. This function enables text input in any application or text field on the operating system. Through global hotkeys, users activate recording while their cursor remains in the target input area. The program captures speech, converts it to text, and inserts the result directly at the active cursor position. Both push-to-talk and toggle recording modes are supported, giving control over when recording starts and stops without requiring window switching or manual pasting.
  • Local transcription. Speech recognition runs entirely on the user's machine using Whisper models available for macOS and Windows. Users download and manage transcription models within the application. By default, no audio data is transmitted to external servers, which maintains privacy and allows operation without an internet connection. Model selection affects accuracy, speed, and resource consumption.
  • Cloud transcription. As an optional alternative to local processing, the program connects to external transcription providers including Groq, OpenAI, Deepgram, and Mistral. This function suits users who need higher accuracy, faster processing, or support for languages and audio conditions where local models underperform. Cloud transcription requires an internet connection and provider credentials configured in the settings.
  • AI formatting. Raw dictation often contains filler words, false starts, and inconsistent punctuation. This function sends transcribed text through AI services such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, or any custom OpenAI-compatible endpoint. The result is cleaned, structured, and formatted text. Users configure which provider to use and can compare original and formatted versions in the history view.
  • Custom vocabulary. Domain-specific terms, technical jargon, proper nouns, and abbreviations frequently cause recognition errors in speech-to-text systems. This function allows users to define a list of such terms along with their correct spellings. The program automatically replaces misrecognized variants with the defined terms during or after transcription, improving accuracy for specialized fields like medicine, engineering, or software development.
  • File transcription. Beyond live dictation, the program processes pre-recorded audio and video files. Users select a file, choose a local or cloud transcription engine, and receive a text transcript. This function supports batch processing of recordings, making it suitable for transcribing meetings, interviews, lectures, and voice memos stored on the device.
  • Transcript history. Every dictation and file transcription is stored in a local database. The history view provides search and filter capabilities, displays metadata such as date, duration, and model used, and allows inspection of both original and formatted text. Users can copy entries, save them to files, or re-transcribe with different settings. This creates a reusable archive of spoken content.
  • Voice commands. This function maps spoken phrases to editing and navigation actions. Instead of manually pressing keys, users speak commands to delete words, move the cursor, select text, or perform other operations. Voice commands keep hands free during dictation and reduce interruptions in the writing process. The command set is configurable within the application settings.
  • Desktop integration. The program runs in the system tray and operates in the background without occupying screen space. It can launch automatically at system startup. Recording overlays provide visual feedback during active dictation. These integration features ensure the program remains accessible through hotkeys while staying out of the way during other work.
  • In-app updates. The application checks for new versions in the background and notifies the user when an update is available. Installation packages are signed and verified before execution. This function maintains the program with security patches, bug fixes, and new features without requiring manual downloads from the website.
  • Cross-platform support. Whisprtypr runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux desktop environments. The same core functionality, including local transcription, hotkeys, and history, is available across platforms. Platform-specific adaptations cover system tray behavior, hotkey handling, and audio device access.
  • Recording modes. Users choose between push-to-talk, where holding a hotkey records and releasing stops, and toggle mode, where a single press starts and another stops recording. This flexibility accommodates different workflows, from short phrases to long dictation sessions, without requiring changes to application settings during use.

Whisprtypr was created by the developer known as Johuniq under the BD flag. The project began as a local-first alternative to cloud-dependent dictation tools, with the goal of keeping audio data on the user's device. The program is written primarily in Rust for the backend and TypeScript for the frontend, using the Tauri framework for cross-platform desktop packaging. The first public release appeared in 2024. Development continues through GitHub, where the repository hosts issues, pull requests, and documentation. The software is distributed under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0, with vendored third-party components retaining their original licenses.
