VoxScribe

VoxScribe — Free Download. Voice dictation

VoxScribe is a Windows desktop application for voice dictation that operates through a hold-to-talk hotkey system. The program captures speech while the user holds the F9 key, transcribes the audio locally on the CPU using faster-whisper technology, and types the resulting text directly into the currently focused window. The application removes filler words through rule-based cleanup and ensures that voice data never leaves the computer. This tool serves anyone who needs hands-free text input across various Windows applications without relying on cloud services or clipboard operations.

  • Hold-to-talk hotkey. The primary input mechanism allows the user to press and hold the F9 key from any application or window on the Windows system. While the key remains pressed, VoxScribe captures microphone audio in the background. Upon release, the captured speech undergoes transcription and the resulting text appears in the active text field. This design eliminates the need for toggle modes or switching between recording states, providing a continuous and direct method for dictating text wherever the cursor is positioned.
  • Direct typing into focused window. Instead of placing transcribed text into the clipboard for later pasting, VoxScribe injects the text directly into the application that currently holds focus. This approach preserves any existing clipboard contents and removes the extra step of manually pasting. The text appears at the exact cursor location, whether in a text editor, browser form, chat application, or any other program that accepts keyboard input. This behavior ensures a seamless flow from speech to written text without interrupting the user's workflow.
  • Local transcription engine. Speech-to-text conversion runs entirely on the user's central processing unit through the faster-whisper implementation. No audio data is transmitted to external servers, cloud platforms, or third-party services. The transcription process occurs on the local machine, which means the voice recordings remain private and secure. This local operation also allows the program to function without an internet connection, making it suitable for environments where network access is restricted or where data privacy is a primary concern.
  • Filler word removal. A rule-based cleanup pass processes the raw transcription output to eliminate common filler words such as "um", "uh", "like", and "you know". The system also corrects spacing and capitalization issues that may arise during speech-to-text conversion. This cleanup operates without calling any paid artificial intelligence application programming interface, keeping the feature free and self-contained. The result is cleaner, more professional text that requires fewer manual edits after dictation.
  • Floating status indicator. A small pill-shaped visual element appears on screen to show the current state of the application. During recording, the indicator displays a Recording status. During transcription, it shows a Transcribing status. This visual feedback informs the user about what the program is doing at any moment without requiring them to switch windows or check a separate application. The indicator remains unobtrusive and disappears or changes state as the dictation process progresses through its stages.
  • System tray operation. VoxScribe starts hidden and runs from the Windows system tray area. The application does not open a main window upon launch, which keeps the desktop uncluttered. Users access settings and options through the tray icon menu. This design allows the program to remain available for dictation at all times while staying out of the way when not in use. The tray menu provides access to hotkey configuration and other program controls without requiring a full graphical interface.
  • Changeable hotkey. The default F9 hotkey can be modified through the system tray menu option labeled "Change Hotkey...". This feature accommodates users who prefer a different key or who experience conflicts with other applications that already use F9. The hotkey works system-wide, meaning it functions regardless of which application has focus. Users can select a key combination that suits their keyboard layout and workflow preferences, ensuring that the dictation trigger remains accessible and does not interfere with other software.
  • Clipboard preservation. Because VoxScribe types text directly rather than copying it to the clipboard, any content that the user has previously copied remains intact. This behavior differs from many dictation tools that overwrite clipboard contents with transcribed text. Users who rely on clipboard functionality for other tasks can continue to do so without losing their copied data when using voice dictation. The direct typing method integrates with the operating system's input system without altering the clipboard state.
  • No account requirement. The core dictation functionality operates without requiring the user to create an account, sign in, or provide any personal information. There is no subscription model for basic use. An optional one-time Pro unlock exists for additional features, but the primary voice dictation capability remains free and accessible immediately after installation. This approach removes barriers to entry and allows users to begin dictating without going through registration or authentication processes.
  • Open-source license. VoxScribe is distributed under the MIT license, which grants users the freedom to use, modify, and distribute the software. The source code is available for inspection and contribution. This licensing model encourages transparency and community involvement in the project's development. Users who possess programming knowledge can examine how the application works, adapt it to their specific needs, or contribute improvements back to the project. The open-source nature also provides assurance that the program does not contain hidden functionality.
  • Windows SmartScreen handling. The installer is currently unsigned, which causes Windows SmartScreen to display an "unknown publisher" warning during the first run. The development team is pursuing a free certificate through the SignPath Foundation's open-source program. Documentation in CODE_SIGNING.md outlines the policy requirements for that program. Alternative signing options include traditional OV or EV certificates from commercial authorities or Microsoft Trusted Signing through Azure. After obtaining a certificate, running the sign_release.ps1 script applies the signature to the build.
  • CPU-based processing. The transcription engine relies on the computer's central processing unit rather than requiring a dedicated graphics processing unit. This design choice makes VoxScribe compatible with a broader range of Windows machines, including those without powerful discrete graphics cards. The faster-whisper library provides efficient CPU inference for speech recognition tasks. Users do not need to purchase additional hardware to use the dictation features, and the program can run on standard business laptops or desktop computers.

The development of VoxScribe began as a project by Ahmed Hmam, with the application released in 2026. The program was created as a free and open-source alternative to existing voice dictation tools, particularly modeled after Wispr Flow but with a focus on local processing and privacy. The choice to implement transcription through faster-whisper on the CPU reflects a commitment to keeping voice data on the user's machine rather than sending it to cloud servers.
