  • Password and private key authentication. AquaSSH supports connecting to remote servers using either a password or a private key. Supported key types include Ed25519, RSA, and ECDSA. This covers common authentication methods required by modern SSH servers and allows users to choose the approach that matches their security policy.
  • xterm-compatible terminal. The built-in terminal emulator follows xterm behavior and provides scrollback, multiple tabs, copy and paste operations, and configurable color schemes. It remains compatible with terminal-based applications such as vim and tmux, ensuring that interactive programs work without display or input issues.
  • Host key verification. The client performs host key verification and maintains a managed list of known hosts. This protects against man-in-the-middle attacks by alerting the user when a server presents an unexpected key, and it allows reviewing or removing trusted host entries.
  • On-device SSH key generation. Users can generate Ed25519 and RSA key pairs directly on the device. Private keys remain in local storage and are protected by the operating system keystore. This removes the need to transfer private keys from external systems and reduces exposure during key creation.
  • Host and identity storage. The free version stores up to three hosts and one identity, all encrypted in the device keystore. This provides a basic set of connection profiles for occasional use while keeping credentials protected by hardware-backed storage where available.
  • Mosh support. AquaSSH includes support for Mosh sessions. Mosh maintains interactive connectivity over unstable or high-latency networks by using roaming and local echo techniques, which helps when working with servers over mobile or unreliable connections.
  • ProxyJump and bastion chaining. The client supports ProxyJump and chained bastion hosts. This allows reaching servers that are not directly accessible from the public internet by routing the SSH connection through one or more intermediate jump hosts, matching common infrastructure layouts.
  • Host import and grouping. Connection profiles can be imported from ~/.ssh/config, Termius CSV exports, and PuTTY .reg files. Hosts can also be organized into groups. This simplifies migration from other clients and keeps larger server inventories structured.
  • SFTP file browser. The Pro version adds an SFTP file browser that reuses the existing SSH connection. Users can upload, download, rename, and delete files without opening a second session or performing an additional login, which reduces connection overhead and keeps file operations tied to the active shell.
  • Port forwarding. Pro users can create local, remote, and dynamic (SOCKS5) tunnels. Forwarding rules are managed per session, so access to services behind a jump host or remote network can be configured alongside the SSH connection that carries the traffic.
  • Snippets and session search. Saved commands can be executed with one tap, and session output can be searched in full text. This supports repetitive administrative tasks and helps locate specific log lines or command results within long terminal histories.
  • Encrypted backup and restore. A single passphrase-encrypted file contains hosts, identities, and snippets. Restoring this file on another platform recreates the saved configuration, which simplifies moving between devices without relying on a cloud account.
  • Unlimited hosts and identities. The Pro purchase removes the limits of the free version and allows storing an unrestricted number of hosts and identities. This suits users who manage many servers or require separate identities for different environments.
  • Image viewing and theme gallery. Pro includes the ability to view images stored on the server and access a full theme gallery. These features extend the client beyond text-only operations and allow visual inspection of files and broader appearance customization.
  • Privacy-oriented design. AquaSSH does not require an account and does not operate cloud servers for storing secrets. Credentials remain in the Android Keystore, and crash reporting is strictly opt-in. This approach limits data collection and keeps sensitive material on the device.

AquaSSH was created by a small development team focused on building a practical SSH client for mobile and desktop platforms. The project began in the early 2020s and has been actively maintained since then. The application is written in Dart using the Flutter framework, which allows a single codebase to target multiple operating systems. The developers prioritized local storage of credentials, a real terminal emulator, and a one-time purchase model instead of subscriptions. Over time, the free version received Mosh support, ProxyJump, host import, and grouping, while the Pro tier added SFTP, port forwarding, snippets, session search, and encrypted backup.
