DeskVNC is a remote desktop application that combines VNC, RDP and SSH connectivity into a single environment for Windows, macOS and Linux. It provides tabbed and split-pane sessions, SFTP file transfer, SSH terminal access, clipboard sharing, local network scanning, Wake on LAN and keychain-backed credential storage. An optional MCP control plane enables compatible AI agents to view screens, click, type, transfer files and run commands over standard VNC, RDP or SSH connections without installing additional software on the remote machine. No account, no telemetry and no paid tier restricting features.

Multi-protocol sessions. DeskVNC connects to remote machines using VNC, RDP and SSH from one application window. Each protocol has its own native Rust core, so sessions do not rely on external remote desktop libraries. Hosts are stored as tiles with their own credentials and connection settings, and a double click opens the session. This removes the need to keep separate clients for Windows servers, Linux machines and network equipment.
Tabbed and split-pane workspace. Multiple remote sessions can run at the same time in tabs, and any tab can be divided into panes to watch several machines side by side. Each pane keeps its own connection, scaling and input settings. This layout supports administration of clustered or related systems without switching windows.
MCP control plane. An optional Model Context Protocol interface lets compatible AI agents connect to remote computers through ordinary VNC, RDP or SSH. The agent can observe the screen, move the pointer, click, type, transfer files and execute commands. A human operator can take over the session at any moment. No agent component is installed on the remote host.
SFTP file transfer. Files move in both directions between the local machine and any SSH host. The transfer runs over the same connection as the terminal session, so no separate file server or sharing service is required. Progress and errors are reported in the session interface.
SSH terminal. A terminal is available for every SSH host and survives temporary network drops. It supports tunnels and PuTTY key files. The terminal can be opened alongside a graphical session to the same machine, which is convenient when a task needs both a command line and a desktop view.
Clipboard synchronization. Text copied on the local machine can be pasted into the remote session and the reverse direction works as well. Clipboard behaviour can be adjusted per session from the toolbar. This removes the need to transfer short strings through files or chat applications.
Network scanning and discovery. DeskVNC scans the local subnet and identifies machines that are listening for VNC, RDP or SSH. It uses mDNS, LLMNR, NetBIOS and MS-RPC for name resolution and performs banner fingerprinting to identify services. Wake on LAN can power on sleeping machines before connecting.
Credential storage. Passwords and keys are kept in Keychain Services on macOS, Credential Manager on Windows or Secret Service on Linux. A headless machine can use an encrypted file fallback. Saving a host writes no sensitive data into the profile database, and this behaviour is covered by a test.
Adaptive rendering. The remote picture is decoded in Rust and painted through WebGL2, so complete frames do not cross the process boundary. H.264 decoding uses hardware acceleration where the webview provides it. Scaling, display selection, pointer behaviour and quality can be changed while a session is running.
Input fidelity. Scroll wheel and trackpad gestures on the remote desktop match the direction configured on the local system. Keyboard layouts, dead keys and CJK input methods reach the remote intact. System shortcuts can be passed through when required.
Session recovery. A dropped connection is reestablished automatically and the reason for the interruption is reported. The session state is preserved where the protocol allows it, so work can continue without rebuilding the connection manually.
View-only and screenshot modes. A session can be locked to view-only so that input is not sent to the remote machine. A screenshot button captures the current remote desktop to a local image file. These controls are available from the floating toolbar.
Fullscreen and pane management. Fullscreen mode is available from the View menu with F11 on Windows and Linux or Cmd+Ctrl+F on macOS. Panes can be split and rearranged inside a tab. The menu bar is hidden and restored consistently when entering and leaving fullscreen.
Cross-platform builds. DeskVNC runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. The macOS build is signed and notarized. Windows and Linux builds are distributed from the release page with published checksums. No runtime account or online service is required to use the application.

The project is developed by psmux and contributors. DeskVNC was created in 2024 and is written in Rust with a Tauri-based application shell. The three protocol cores for VNC, RDP and SSH are implemented in Rust rather than wrapped around existing libraries. Development continues on the public repository, where releases, issue reports and source code are available under the MIT or Apache 2.0 license.
