BraveDebloater

BraveDebloater — Free Download. Remove Brave browser extras

BraveDebloater applies Brave and Chromium enterprise policies to strip browser surfaces such as Rewards, Wallet, VPN, Leo AI Chat, telemetry, and promotional UI. The script starts in preview mode and changes nothing until the Apply flag is added. Backups are written before each applied run unless the NoBackup flag is used. The tool works on Windows, macOS, and Linux through PowerShell while writing native policy files for each platform. It refuses to disable Brave updates, edit hosts files, remove extensions, turn off Brave Shields, or add Shield allowlists. The default run uses the Extreme preset and does not lock Shields. Closed-source policy validation and profile preference cleanup are included when requested. Restore operations are limited to Brave policy keys and Preferences files under the selected profile root.

  • Rewards and Wallet removal. Removes Brave Rewards ads and tipping surfaces plus the integrated cryptocurrency wallet UI. This cleanup targets the policy values that disable Rewards notifications, wallet prompts, and related onboarding cards from appearing in the browser interface. It does not delete any existing wallet data or funds but prevents the features from loading during normal browsing sessions.
  • VPN and Leo AI Chat removal. Disables the built-in VPN subscription prompts and the Leo AI assistant entry points in the sidebar and address bar. The function writes Chromium and Brave policies that remove the VPN icon, AI chat button, and related promotional dialogs so these services are not advertised or initialized on the local machine.
  • News, Talk, Playlist, and Email Aliases removal. Strips the Brave News feed on new tabs, the private video calling feature Talk, the media Playlist tool, and the email alias generator. Each surface is controlled through a separate policy assignment that hides the associated menu items and dashboard widgets from the default browser profile.
  • Speedreader and Wayback prompt removal. Turns off the Speedreader simplified view button and the Wayback Machine archive prompt that appears on error pages. The function removes the extra UI elements while leaving the normal browser error pages and standard reader mode behavior unchanged.
  • Telemetry and metrics disabling. Blocks Brave P3A, stats ping, Web Discovery Project, Chromium metrics reporting, URL-keyed collection, and remote spellcheck services. The policy set also disables remote search suggestions and network prediction so the browser does not send usage data or query text to Brave or Google servers during routine operation.
  • Background mode and promotions removal. Stops Brave from running in the background after the last window closes and removes promotional notifications and sponsored content prompts. The cleanup includes disabling Browser Labs, new tab cards, shopping list, QR generator, translate prompts, and the Google search side panel from the Extreme preset.
  • Autofill and translate prompt removal. Disables autofill suggestions for forms and payment methods plus the automatic translation offer that appears on foreign-language pages. The function targets the Chromium policy values that control these services and prevents the browser from storing or offering form data without user action.
  • Google search side panel removal. Hides the Google search side panel that opens when text is selected or when the search icon is clicked. This feature removal is applied through the Extreme preset and can be excluded using the ExcludeFeature parameter when a user wants to keep the panel active.
  • Profile preference cleanup. Edits each Brave profile Preferences JSON file to hide additional new tab sponsored backgrounds and some toolbar surfaces that are not covered by enterprise policies. The script skips this step when Brave is running because the browser can overwrite the file. All Preferences files are read and written as UTF-8 without a byte order mark to preserve non-ASCII characters.
  • Doctor diagnostic mode. Runs a read-only check of Brave policy locations, detected feature status, unknown Brave policies, protected policy names, Brave process state, profile preference files, and backup files. The Doctor report helps identify machine-wide policies that make Brave settings appear managed for every Windows user even when current-user policies are empty.
  • Feature list and export output. Lists every feature name that can be included, excluded, or used with the OnlyFeature parameter. The ExportPolicyPath option writes a .reg file for Windows registry targets, a .plist for macOS, a .mobileconfig for iOS and iPadOS, or a JSON file for Linux and Android without requiring elevation or writing to the policy target.
  • Backup management and restore. Creates a JSON backup in the backups folder before each applied run unless the NoBackup flag is used for policy-only changes. The restore function validates the backup file before writing and limits registry restores to Brave policy keys and profile file restores to Preferences files under the selected profile root. The ListBackups, PruneBackupsOlderThanDays, and KeepLatestBackups commands manage retention.
  • Shields locking add-on. Enforces default ad blocking, standard fingerprinting protection, HTTPS upgrades, and stricter referrer behavior through enterprise policy. The LockShields flag is an optional add-on that cannot be used to disable Shields, add Shield-disabled URLs, weaken Safe Browsing, or turn off updates.
  • Machine-wide policy scope. Applies Brave policy values under the local-machine registry key on Windows, the managed preferences plist path on macOS, or the managed policy JSON file on Linux. Previewing machine-wide policy works from a normal session and prints a note when the Apply run needs administrator or root rights. The local machine path is exactly HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\BraveSoftware\Brave on Windows.
  • Channel-specific profile targeting. Directs profile preference cleanup to Brave Stable, Beta, or Nightly using the Channel parameter. The default profile path is Stable, and the ProfileRoot parameter overrides any detected path. Policy behavior is unchanged across channels, but the Preferences file location differs for Beta and Nightly builds.

BraveDebloater was created by osfv and first released in 2023 as a PowerShell script for removing Brave browser features that cannot be disabled through normal settings. The project grew from a small collection of registry keys into a multi-platform tool that uses native policy files on Windows, macOS, and Linux. The developer maintains the repository on GitHub and publishes release archives with SHA256 checksums for verification. The script is written entirely in PowerShell and requires no compiled binaries or external dependencies. PowerShell 5.1 and PowerShell 7 are supported, with specific fixes for UTF-8 handling on Windows PowerShell 5.1. The project has added features such as Doctor mode, ExportPolicyPath, feature toggles, backup retention, and cross-platform restore validation through iterative updates. The tool refuses to disable updates, edit hosts files, remove extensions, turn off Brave Shields, or add Shield allowlists by design, which keeps the cleanup focused on policy-controlled surfaces and profile preferences.
