DesktopTools

DesktopTools — Free Download. Capture, Record, Annotate

DesktopTools is a Windows 11 app that combines screenshots, screen recording, image annotation, and presentation tools into one program. Capture a region, window, or monitor, then add arrows, shapes, or text. Record walkthroughs with microphone and system audio. Draw over the desktop, use a spotlight or teleprompter, extract text with OCR, and keep floating notes nearby. The app runs from the notification area, so tools are available without interrupting other work. No account is required, and user content stays on the local computer.

  • Region capture with smart suggestions. Captures a selected area of the screen. The tool suggests an area under the pointer, and a click on the highlight captures it. Dragging selects any custom area. A frozen screen suggests windows from saved geometry. Live selection can suggest accessible panels, images, and video areas. An older frozen drawing frame keeps manual selection. The feature can be disabled in Region capture settings. Selection remains local and offline.
  • Window and monitor capture. Captures a specific application window or an entire monitor. This function is used when the full context of a program or a complete display must be saved. It works with multiple monitors and records the exact visible content of the chosen source.
  • Image annotation. Adds arrows, shapes, and text to a screenshot. The original image stays untouched, and the edited copy is exported separately. This function is used to point out important details, explain steps, or highlight errors in a screenshot. The editor switches clearly between the original and the edited copy.
  • Screen recording with audio. Records a window, monitor, or region with microphone and system audio. The recorder shows microphone and system-audio activity, offers a five-second test clip, checks destination free space, and reports the frame rate stored in a completed MP4 file. Device activity and file metadata do not guarantee audible audio or distinct captured frames, so the test clip should be played to verify the result.
  • Desktop drawing and laser pointer. Draws over any application on the desktop. A laser pointer highlights a detail, and a dimming mode focuses attention around a spotlight. This function is used during live demonstrations, lessons, or presentations when the audience must follow a specific area of the screen.
  • Spotlight tool. Dims the screen around a chosen area. Arrow keys move the spotlight, Enter places a sample mark, and Esc clears it. This function is used to direct attention to one part of the display without hiding the rest of the content completely.
  • Teleprompter. Displays a script near the active window while recording or presenting. This function is used to keep spoken text visible without switching to another device. It helps maintain a steady pace during walkthroughs, tutorials, and narrated recordings.
  • OCR text extraction. Pulls text out of the screen or from a captured image. This function is used to copy text that cannot be selected normally, such as text inside a video, a scanned document, or a protected viewer. The recognition runs locally on the computer.
  • Local translation. Translates between English and Russian without cloud processing. This function is used when a quick translation is needed for text taken from a screenshot or a note. The translation stays on the local machine and does not require an internet connection.
  • Floating notes. Keeps notes on the desktop near other windows. Notes can attach to an open window, follow its movement, hide while it is minimized, and reappear when it returns. Attachments are saved with notes and can be removed from the notes list. This function is used to keep instructions, reminders, or reference text visible during work.
  • Image editing. Crops, adjusts, and modifies images inside the same toolkit. Crop instructions are clearer across editors, and the video editor can return to its latest rendered preview after showing the original. This function is used for small corrections before an image is shared or saved.
  • Video editing. Trims and adjusts recorded video. The editor opens maximized for a larger workspace and has maximize and restore controls. This function is used to remove unwanted parts of a recording or to prepare a clip for export.
  • Background removal. Removes the background from an image. This function is used to prepare a subject for a document, a slide, or a composite image. The processing runs locally on the computer.
  • Color picker. Selects a color from any point on the screen. This function is used to match colors, copy a hex value, or reuse a shade from an existing image or interface.
  • QR code generator. Creates a QR code from text or a link. This function is used to share a web address, a short message, or a small amount of data with a phone or another device.
  • Pin window. Keeps a chosen window above other windows. The function changes only windows that DesktopTools pinned itself. Windows that were already on top keep their own state. A queued shortcut message from an older binding cannot trigger Pin window after shortcut settings change.
  • Favorite tools and shortcuts. Pins the most used tools to the home screen. Key combinations can be changed, and individual shortcuts can be enabled or disabled. This function is used to reach a tool without opening the full menu.
  • Appearance and language settings. Chooses light, dark, or system mode. The interface is available in five languages. This function is used to match the program to the operating system theme or to a preferred language.
  • News page. Shows repository announcements with an unread indicator and optional notifications. A security notice can highlight a verified stable update without installing or restarting automatically. The existing confirmation remains required. Refresh is placed in the header, and announcement details are aligned with the cards.
  • Setup and maintenance. Installs, updates, repairs, and uninstalls the program. Setup has a clearer task summary, places Advanced options in the left rail when extra choices are available, and supports resizing from its lower-right corner. Data-preservation choices remain available during these operations.

DesktopTools was created by the developer vg2222 and has been developed since 2026. The program is written in C# and is distributed for Windows 11. It is released under the MIT License. The release includes an installer and a portable ZIP, and SHA-256 checksums are provided. The project does not require an account and does not collect telemetry. Screenshots, notes, text recognition, translation, and background removal are processed locally. Before sharing a screen, the user chooses where to save images and recordings. Tool-window capture exclusion depends on the application used to record or share the screen, so the receiving viewer should be checked before relying on it.
