FakeCam is a virtual camera app for Windowsand Linux that lets you feed a video file, a still image, your desktop screen, or a recorded loop of yourself into any program that reads a webcam. Conferencing and streaming tools such as Zoom, Teams, Meet, Discord and Skype see the virtual device as an ordinary camera, so the picture they receive comes from the source you selected rather than from a lens. The app also supports animated GIFs, playlists with automatic advance, region and window capture, and an AFK mode that keeps your seat occupied while you step away. Version 2.4 fixed a crash that could close the program when a broadcast stopped or right after a recorded clip was saved, made the mouse pointer visible in screen capture, and taught window capture to recover on its own after Windows resets the graphics driver.

  • Virtual camera output. The core function of the program is registering a software camera that Windows and third-party applications treat as a real webcam. While FakeCam is running, the user selects the FakeCam video input device inside Zoom, Teams, Meet, Discord, Skype or any other camera-aware program, and that program receives the picture generated by FakeCam instead of the feed from the physical webcam. The virtual device works alongside the real camera rather than replacing it, so both sources remain available and the user can switch between them in the target application without closing FakeCam.
  • Video file streaming. A video clip stored on the computer can be loaded into FakeCam and played into the virtual camera. Playback can be looped so the clip repeats indefinitely during a call, and the frame rate and resolution of the source are preserved where the target application supports them. Hardware-accelerated decoding is used for high-resolution clips at 50 and 60 frames per second, which keeps playback at full speed on machines with a suitable graphics card. The loaded clip becomes the camera picture for every program that reads the virtual device.
  • Still image broadcasting. Instead of a moving picture, a single image file can be sent to the virtual camera. The image stays on screen for as long as the broadcast runs and can be stretched to fill the frame when its aspect ratio differs from the selected output resolution. This mode suits situations where a stable, unchanging picture is required, such as holding a logo, a slide or a fixed background in front of the audience without occupying the physical camera.
  • Animated GIF support. Animated GIF files can be used as the camera source, with the animation playing through the virtual device. The program handles the transition from an animated GIF to a video without the brief glitch that earlier versions produced when the playlist moved between the two media types. This gives another format for short repeating sequences that do not need the size or the audio track of a full video file.
  • Playlist with automatic advance. Several videos and images can be queued in a single playlist and played one after another, with the program advancing to the next item when the current one finishes. Items can be reordered by dragging and dropping them in the list. Every entry shows a thumbnail preview so the correct file can be identified before it goes on air, and the Recent files menu also displays thumbnails for quick access to material used earlier.
  • Screen capture as camera source. The entire desktop, a rectangular region drawn by the user, or a single application window can be captured and sent to the virtual camera. This makes the screen available as a camera feed even in programs that have no screen-sharing function of their own. The taskbar can be hidden from the captured picture, and in version 2.4 the mouse pointer is included in the capture so the presenter can point at items, with an option to turn the pointer off in the capture settings.
  • Window capture with driver recovery. When a single window is used as the source, the capture keeps running through events that would normally interrupt it. It survives locking the PC, passing through a Windows security prompt, and a reset of the graphics driver caused by sleep, a driver update or a switch between two graphics cards. In the last case the window capture restores itself automatically instead of freezing on the final frame, so a live broadcast continues without manual intervention.
  • AFK mode with recorded loop. A short clip of the user can be recorded inside the program and played back as a loop while the user is away from the call. When the user returns, the program cuts back to the live camera without a visible break, so viewers do not see the moment of the switch. This covers the seat during short absences and keeps the camera picture continuous.
  • Resolution and playback controls. The output resolution is chosen from a set of predefined options, and the loaded image can be stretched to fit the frame when the source dimensions do not match. Video content can be looped, the timeline can be clicked to seek to a position in the clip, and seeking accuracy was improved in version 2.2. These controls determine how the source material is presented through the virtual camera.
  • One-click Windows installer. The program is installed through a one-click installer that sets up the virtual camera automatically, so the device appears among the available cameras without a separate manual registration step. A portable ZIP version is offered for users who prefer to run the program without installation. If the virtual camera fails to install, version 2.3 and later report the exact cause and the steps required to resolve it instead of failing without explanation.
  • Feedback from inside the app. A feedback function in Settings and in the tray icon menu lets the user report a problem, suggest an idea or ask a question directly from the program. No account is required and no external email client is needed, which shortens the path between encountering an issue and passing the report to the developers. Replies and status information are handled through the same channel.
  • Interface language selection. The language of the interface can be changed, and the choice is stored reliably between sessions in both the installed build and the Microsoft Store version. Turkish was added in version 2.3. Text fields in the program have the standard right-click menu with cut, copy, paste and select all, which simplifies entry of a license key or any other text.
  • PRO license option. FakeCam remains free to use, and an optional one-time PRO purchase unlocks the full set of features. The purchase includes all future updates and supports continued development of the program. The free mode and the PRO mode share the same installer and the same virtual camera device, so the license only changes which capabilities are available.

FakeCam is developed by a small independent team that publishes the program under the FakeCam name and distributes it through its own site at fakecam.net and through the Microsoft Store. The project began as a lightweight utility for feeding video files and images into a webcam slot on Windows and has been extended release by release with screen capture, window capture, playlists, AFK mode and hardware-accelerated playback. The 2.x line, introduced in 2026, brought a redesigned interface, the Playlist, the PRO license and the one-click installer with automatic virtual camera setup.
