GeoPhoto

GeoPhoto — Free Download. Geotag and Map Viewer

GeoPhoto is a Windows application developed by Timo Partl that places your photo and video collection onto an interactive world map. It reads embedded GPS coordinates from image metadata and displays each file at the exact place where it was captured. The program supports JPG, HEIC, MP4 and many other common media formats, groups pictures automatically, and offers slideshow playback with recording locations. Geotags can be added or corrected, and cloud sources such as OneDrive can be connected for map-based browsing. Additional information stored in Exif tags is available for every selected item.

  • Map display of media. The core function of GeoPhoto is showing photographs and videos on a global map layout. After folders are added as sources, the application scans their contents, extracts GPS coordinates from file metadata and pins each item to its capture position. Markers can be selected to open the corresponding file, and the map can be zoomed or panned to inspect clusters of pictures taken in the same area. Files without coordinates remain in the library but are not placed on the map until geotags are assigned.
  • File format support. GeoPhoto reads metadata from a broad set of media types, including JPG, JPEG, HEIC, HEIF, PNG, TIFF, MP4, MOV and several other containers used by cameras, phones and drones. Still images and video files are handled inside one library, so recordings from different devices can be reviewed together. Format handling covers both the visual content and the embedded Exif or QuickTime metadata that stores coordinates, timestamps and camera parameters.
  • Slideshow with locations. A dedicated slideshow mode presents pictures and videos in sequence while showing the place where each file was recorded. The map view follows the playback and moves to the appropriate region for every item. This mode is intended for reviewing travel routes, family archives or field documentation, where the connection between the image and its geographic origin matters. Playback order and the visible map area change together with the selected media.
  • Geotag addition. Photos and videos that lack GPS data can receive coordinates directly in GeoPhoto. The position is chosen on the map, and the application writes the value into the file metadata. This operation is applied to individual items or to a selection of files, which is relevant for images imported from cameras without a built-in receiver or from scanners and messaging applications that strip location data.
  • Geotag editing. Existing coordinates can be reviewed and corrected. If a recorded position is inaccurate, shifted or belongs to a different place, the value is modified on the map and saved back to the file. Editing works with the same metadata fields that the application reads during scanning, so corrected positions appear immediately in the map view, in the slideshow and in any later export of the library.
  • Track-based geotagging. GeoPhoto imports GPX and KML tracks recorded by navigation devices, phones or sports watches. The application matches the timestamps of photos and videos with the points of the track and assigns the corresponding coordinates automatically. This method is used when a camera has no GPS module but the recording time is known, and it produces positions along the actual travelled route rather than a single manual point.
  • Automatic grouping. Media files are grouped according to their capture data. Items recorded close in time and in the same area are combined into sets, which simplifies navigation through large archives. Grouping reduces the number of separate markers on the map and lets the user review a trip, an event or a single shooting session as one unit instead of inspecting every file individually.
  • Cloud source support. GeoPhoto connects to cloud storage and displays media stored there on the map. OneDrive content can be browsed in the same way as local folders, with coordinates read from the files and placed on the map layout. This removes the need to download an entire archive to a local disk before reviewing the geographic distribution of the recordings.
  • Exif information panel. For every selected photo or video, the application shows additional data taken from Exif tags. This includes camera model, lens information, exposure parameters, capture date and time, resolution and other recorded attributes. The panel gives context about how and when a file was produced, which supports sorting, verification and documentation tasks.
  • Map view modes. The map layout can be switched between standard, hybrid, satellite and terrain modes. Each mode changes the visual representation of the underlying surface, from a schematic road map to photographic imagery or elevation data. The choice affects how terrain, urban areas and routes are perceived when the positions of the media are examined.
  • Date filtering. A date filter restricts the displayed items to a defined period. A start date and an end date are set in the configuration, and only files recorded within that interval remain visible on the map. This function separates trips, seasons or project phases from the rest of the archive and reduces the number of markers shown at one time.
  • Folder source management. The source list defines which folders the application scans. Directories are added through the options menu, and their contents are detected automatically. Several folders can be connected at once, including locations on different drives, so a media collection split across multiple directories is presented as a single map-based library.

GeoPhoto was created by developer Timo Partl and has been distributed as a Windows application since the mid-2010s, with the Store version appearing in the following years. The program is written in C# and built on the .NET framework, using Windows presentation technologies for the map layout and metadata processing components for reading Exif and QuickTime information.
