OmniDesk

OmniDesk — Free Download. Local Sync

OmniDesk is a cross-platform productivity tool for real-time clipboard synchronization and direct local file transfers between computers on the same network. It operates entirely peer-to-peer without cloud dependencies. Devices authenticate using a temporary six-digit PIN and cryptographic tokens. A web dashboard and system tray integration provide connection monitoring and control. Clipboard content including text, links, and code snippets replicates instantly across paired machines with loop-prevention. Files of any size transfer through drag-and-drop in the browser or command line. Automatic peer discovery uses mDNS and subnet scanning. Native notifications alert users to transfers and pairing events.

  • Clipboard synchronization. This function replicates copied text, hyperlinks, and code fragments from one paired computer to another in real time. A loop-prevention mechanism stops repeated propagation of the same content. Users can pause or resume synchronization through the web dashboard toggle. The feature works across all supported operating systems without additional configuration.
  • Direct file transfer. This function sends files of any size between paired devices over the local network. Users drag and drop files onto a device card in the web dashboard or use the command line interface. Received files save to a default directory: ~/Downloads/OmniDesk on Linux and macOS, or %USERPROFILE%\Downloads\OmniDesk on Windows. Transfer speed depends on local network bandwidth.
  • Peer discovery. This function automatically detects other OmniDesk instances on the same local network. It uses mDNS (ZeroConf) for multicast DNS resolution and subnet scanning for broader detection. Discovered devices appear in the dashboard under a dedicated section. Users initiate pairing directly from the discovered devices list without manual IP entry.
  • Device pairing. This function establishes mutual trust between two computers using a transient six-digit PIN. One device initiates a pairing request and displays the PIN. The other device approves the request by entering the PIN. Successful pairing generates unique cryptographic tokens stored on both machines. Subsequent connections use these tokens without requiring the PIN again.
  • Web dashboard. This function provides a browser-based control panel accessible at http://127.0.0.1:24850/ui/ or through the omnidesk gui command. The dashboard displays paired devices, discovered peers, connection status, and synchronization controls. Users send files, approve pairing requests, and monitor active transfers from this interface. The dashboard runs locally and does not expose data to external networks.
  • System tray integration. This function places an icon in the system tray on Windows or the menu bar on Linux and macOS. Right-clicking the icon opens a context menu with options to open the dashboard, check status, or exit the application. The tray icon also displays native notifications for incoming files, pairing requests, and transfer completions. This integration allows background operation without a visible window.
  • Command line interface. This function offers terminal commands for scripting, automation, and headless server environments. Commands include omnidesk daemon for background service, omnidesk status for daemon information, omnidesk devices for network scanning, omnidesk pair for initiating or approving pairing, and omnidesk send for file transmission. The CLI supports both interactive and scripted workflows.
  • Autostart configuration. This function registers OmniDesk to launch automatically when the user logs into the operating system. Installation scripts set up LaunchAgent on macOS, systemd user service on Linux, and user registry entry on Windows. Autostart operates without requiring root or sudo privileges. Users can disable autostart through the uninstall command or system settings.
  • Native notifications. This function delivers operating system level alerts for key events. Notifications appear when a pairing request arrives, when a file transfer completes, or when a device connects or disconnects. The notification system uses each platform's native APIs: Notification Center on macOS, libnotify on Linux, and Windows Action Center on Windows. Users can mute notifications through system settings.
  • Background daemon. This function runs OmniDesk as a persistent background process without a graphical interface. The daemon listens for incoming connections, maintains paired device states, and handles clipboard and file transfer operations. Users start the daemon with omnidesk daemon or through the autostart service. The --headless flag disables the tray icon for server deployments.
  • Installation management. This function provides platform-specific installers and scripts. macOS offers a .dmg disk image and an install-mac.command helper. Linux provides .deb packages and a user-space install command. Windows supplies a setup wizard .exe and a terminal install command. The omnidesk uninstall command removes binaries, shortcuts, and autostart entries from the user environment.
  • Status reporting. This function displays current daemon information including HTTP port, local device ID, and active connections. Users access status through the omnidesk status command or the web dashboard header. The report includes paired peer names, connection health, and synchronization state. This information assists troubleshooting and network diagnostics.

OmniDesk was created by Thyago Luciano and is licensed under the MIT License with copyright dated 2026. The project is written in Go, requiring Go 1.22 or later for compilation from source. System C and C++ build tools are necessary for native clipboard and system tray bindings. The repository includes scripts for building Debian packages, macOS app bundles, disk images, and Windows executables. Development follows a community contribution model with a contributing guide, product roadmap, code of conduct, and security policy.
