Photo Retouching. GIMP includes a full set of tools for correcting digital photographs. The clone tool removes unwanted objects by copying pixels from another area. The healing tool fixes minor imperfections like blemishes or scratches while preserving texture and lighting. Perspective adjustment corrects tilted images or changes the viewpoint of a scene. Lens distortion filters reduce barrel or pincushion effects introduced by camera optics.
Digital Painting. GIMP supports pressure-sensitive graphics tablets from brands such as Wacom. The brush engine includes dynamics for size, opacity, hardness, and color based on pen pressure or velocity. Artists can create custom brushes from any image or selection. The smudge tool blends colors as if working with wet paint. The ink tool simulates calligraphy pens with adjustable shape and angle.

GIMP development began in 1995 by Spencer Kimball and Peter Mattis as a semester project at the University of California, Berkeley. The first public release appeared in January 1996. The initial codebase was written in C with the Motif toolkit for the interface. In 1997, the project adopted the GTK toolkit which had been created specifically for GIMP. The name originally stood for General Image Manipulation Program before changing to GNU Image Manipulation Program in 1997. Version 1.0 was released in June 1998 after three years of development.
