Shortcut-based access. Ghostyak Boxes creates shortcuts to files, folders, and applications instead of moving the original items. The source files remain in their existing directories, which keeps the underlying storage structure unchanged. A single file or folder can be added to multiple boxes without duplication, and removing a shortcut from a box does not alter or delete the original item in any way.
Movable and resizable boxes. Each box on the desktop can be positioned freely and adjusted to any width or height. Users can group related items into separate boxes for different tasks, projects, or categories. Boxes can be placed side by side, stacked, or arranged across the entire desktop area to match a specific workflow.
Collapsible boxes. Individual boxes can be collapsed to a compact title bar to reduce visual clutter. When a box is collapsed, its contents are hidden but remain accessible by expanding the box again. This function helps keep the desktop clean during periods when certain groups of shortcuts are not needed.
Lockable layouts. A lock function prevents boxes from being moved or resized accidentally. Once locked, boxes stay in their current positions until the user explicitly unlocks them. This is useful for maintaining a fixed desktop arrangement during regular work sessions or when multiple people use the same computer.
Display-aware layout restoration. Ghostyak Boxes remembers the position and size of each box for different monitor configurations. A laptop-only layout and a dual-monitor layout can be saved separately. When a monitor is connected or disconnected, the boxes return to the arrangement previously used for that specific display setup.
Multi-monitor support. The program handles laptop, dual-monitor, and ultrawide screen configurations. Boxes can be placed on any connected display, and the saved positions are tied to the active monitor arrangement. This reduces the need to rearrange boxes manually when switching between different workstations.
Photo boxes with slideshow. A photo box can display images from a selected folder or box. The built-in viewer supports a slideshow mode that cycles through images at a set interval. Users can view photos without opening a separate image application, and the slideshow can be started directly from the desktop box.

For example, a project folder can appear in a Current Work box and a Development box at the same time. Task-focused box creation. Users can build boxes around specific workflows such as Current Work, Development, Frequently Used Apps, Work Documents, Reference Materials, Temporary Work, or Photos. Each box holds only the shortcuts relevant to that task, which reduces the time spent searching for items in a crowded file system.
