lvdExplorer

lvdExplorer — Free Download. File Management

lvdExplorer is a desktop file management application from lvdsystems that replaces the standard Windows File Explorer with a multi-pane, multi-tab workspace. It supports one, two, or four panes, each with independent tab bars, so several directories stay open at once. Directory scans run outside the interface thread and stream results as they finish, which keeps large folders and slow network shares responsive during navigation and file operations.

  • Multi-pane, multi-tab browsing. The program arranges its workspace as one, two (Commander-style side-by-side or stacked), or four independent panes. Each pane carries its own tab bar, and quick-switch icons plus Ctrl+1, Ctrl+2, Ctrl+3, and Ctrl+4 move focus between panes. This structure supports simultaneous work in several folders without opening separate application windows, and tabs can be reordered or duplicated inside any pane.
  • Asynchronous directory scanning. Directory listings are generated off the interface thread and streamed into the pane as entries are discovered. A folder containing more than one hundred thousand files, or a network share with high latency, does not freeze the window while its contents are read. Sorting and column layout apply to the streamed results without waiting for the scan to complete.
  • Session save and restore. Window layout, every pane's open tabs, sort order, and visible columns are written to a session and restored on the next launch. Named sessions are managed through the Session menu and the Sessions entry, so distinct working configurations can be kept and switched between without rebuilding the layout by hand.
  • Instant filter and threaded Finder. Each pane offers a substring or regular expression filter that narrows the visible entries immediately. A separate dockable recursive file finder, opened with Ctrl+F, searches directory trees and streams matches as they are located, which suits locating files by name or pattern across deep hierarchies.
  • Real drag and drop. Files and folders are dragged between panes and tabs, and to or from Explorer and Nautilus. Every transfer is routed through a cancelable progress queue with a live dialog that reports current activity. Cancellation stops the running job without leaving partially completed operations unreported.
  • Native shell integration on Windows. The application invokes the real IContextMenu shell menu, so installed shell extensions appear as they do in Explorer. An Open Terminal Here command starts a console in the current directory, and native Properties dialogs, including combined properties for multi-selections, are available from the application's context menu.
  • File operations through a job queue. Batch rename with pattern or find-and-replace rules, MD5, SHA-1, and SHA-256 checksum generation, folder comparison, and new folder creation run through the same cancelable job queue used by copy, move, and delete. Progress and completion states are reported consistently for every operation type.
  • Per-pane read-only lock. A checkbox in each pane blocks delete, rename, and move actions inside that pane. The lock prevents destructive changes in a directory being used only for reference, and it removes the repeated confirmation prompt that would otherwise appear for each action.
  • Light and dark theming. The interface provides light and dark color schemes that apply across panes, tab bars, dialogs, and progress windows. Theme selection persists between launches as part of the stored session, so the chosen appearance returns with the rest of the layout.
  • Keyboard shortcut editor. Every shortcut in the application can be rebound through a dedicated editor. The editor detects conflicts between assignments and reports them before the new binding is accepted, which keeps the command set consistent when defaults are changed.
  • Portable and installed distribution. Windows builds ship as a portable zip archive and as an Inno Setup installer. Linux builds ship as an AppImage. Both platforms run the same application without accounts, telemetry, or background reporting services.

lvdExplorer is developed by lvdsystems and has been produced since 2022. The program is written in C++ with the Qt framework, which provides the native desktop interface and the cross-platform foundation for the Windows and Linux builds. Development has concentrated on the multi-pane workspace, threaded directory scanning, and the cancelable job queue that handles transfers and file operations. The licensing terms are GPLv3, and the project collects no telemetry and requires no account registration.
