  • Capture selected region. Activates a crosshair mode for dragging a rectangular area on the screen. The selected zone is captured immediately after releasing the mouse button. A magnifier with pixel coordinates assists precise selection. This mode is suitable for isolating a specific part of a window, menu, or dialog without cropping later in an editor.
  • Capture full screen. Takes a snapshot of the entire desktop including all monitors in a multi-display setup. The image is generated at the native resolution of the display. This function is intended for recording the complete workspace state, including taskbar, system tray, open windows, and desktop icons in one file.
  • Capture active window. Detects the currently focused window and captures its full client area including title bar and borders. The detection works with most standard Windows applications, dialogs, and control panel windows. This mode removes the need to manually outline a single window and ensures consistent framing.
  • Capture scrolling web page. Works with Internet Explorer to capture an entire page that extends beyond the visible viewport. The tool scrolls the page automatically, stitches the parts, and produces one tall image. This function is designed for documentation of long articles, forms, or reports without multiple separate screenshots.
  • Capture last region. Repeats the previous region capture with the same coordinates and dimensions. This function saves time when monitoring a fixed area of the screen over a period. It is useful for recording changes in a specific part of an application or comparing states before and after an action.
  • Annotate with shapes. Opens the built-in image editor where rectangles, ellipses, lines, arrows, and freehand drawings can be added. Shape color, thickness, and fill can be adjusted. These tools serve to mark important areas, point to interface elements, or separate sections of the captured image for reports and instructions.
  • Highlight and obfuscate. Provides a highlighter tool for emphasizing text or regions and a blur or pixelate tool for hiding sensitive data. The highlight applies a semi-transparent color layer. The obfuscation tools irreversibly distort the selected area. Both functions are critical for preparing screenshots for public sharing or internal review.
  • Add text labels. Inserts text boxes with adjustable font family, size, color, and background. Text can be placed anywhere on the screenshot. This function is used for numbering steps, adding captions, explaining interface parts, or noting conditions under which the screenshot was taken.
  • Optical Character Recognition. Extracts machine-readable text from the captured image using an installed OCR engine. The recognized text is copied to the clipboard or inserted into the editor. This function converts non-selectable text from dialogs, error messages, or scanned content into editable form without manual retyping.
  • Export to file. Saves the screenshot to a user-defined folder with automatic or manual naming. Supported formats include PNG, JPEG, BMP, GIF, and TIFF. The destination path, filename pattern, and image quality can be configured. This function is the primary method for long-term storage and archiving of captures.
  • Export to clipboard. Copies the captured image or edited result to the Windows clipboard. The image can then be pasted directly into documents, chat applications, graphics editors, or email clients. This function removes intermediate file creation and is suited for quick transfer of a screenshot into another active program.
  • Export to printer. Sends the screenshot directly to the default or selected printer. Print settings include scaling to page, rotation, grayscale forcing, and timestamp stamping. This function addresses scenarios where a physical copy of a screen state is required for signatures, records, or offline documentation.
  • Export to Microsoft Office. Inserts the screenshot into Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or an Outlook email message as an embedded image. The target application is launched or activated automatically. This function supports reporting, presentation creation, and technical communication without manual file insertion.
  • Upload to online services. Transfers the screenshot to configured web destinations such as Imgur, Dropbox, Box, Flickr, JIRA, or Confluence. After upload, a public or private URL is returned to the clipboard. This function enables instant sharing of captures with remote colleagues or embedding in issue trackers and wikis.
  • Run external command. Passes the screenshot file path to a user-defined executable or script. Parameters can include filename, format, and destination. This function integrates Greenshot with custom workflows, such as automatic processing, watermarking, renaming, or uploading through third-party tools.
  • System tray operation. Runs in the background with an icon in the notification area. All capture modes, the editor, preferences, and recent destinations are accessible from the tray context menu. This function keeps the tool available without occupying taskbar space or interrupting active work.
  • Configurable hotkeys. Assigns global keyboard shortcuts for each capture mode and for opening the editor. Hotkeys work even when Greenshot is not the focused application. This function accelerates repetitive capture tasks and supports a keyboard-driven workflow for testers, developers, and technical writers.
  • Multi-language support. Provides interface translation into 32 languages. The active language is selected automatically or manually in preferences. This function makes the tool accessible to users working in non-English Windows environments and in multilingual teams.

Greenshot development began in 2006 as an internal project to address the lack of a fast screenshot utility for Windows. The original developer, Thomas Braun, released the first public version in 2007. Later Jens Klingen and Robin Krom joined the project, forming a small team that maintained the application for over a decade. The program is written in C# using the .NET Framework. The source code is hosted on GitHub and distributed under the GNU General Public License.
