  • Quick check. Produces a two-minute verdict of PASS, WORN or FAULT across RAM, drives, cooling, video memory, hardware error log, network, display and keyboard. This function gives a rapid overall health summary before deeper testing begins, and it highlights which subsystem requires attention first.
  • SMART and drive self-tests. Reads S.M.A.R.T. attributes and launches the drive's internal self-test routines. The tool reports reallocated sectors, pending sectors, wear indicators and temperature history. This helps determine whether a storage device is degrading or close to failure.
  • Surface read with bad-sector repair. Scans the entire surface of a drive for unreadable or slow sectors. When a bad sector is found, the tool attempts repair by rewriting the sector or remapping it through the drive's spare area. This protects data integrity and extends usable drive life.
  • Multi-core memory test. Exercises all CPU cores against system RAM simultaneously. The test identifies the faulty memory module when errors appear, and it reports the failing address range. This distinguishes a bad DIMM from a bad memory slot or controller.
  • Stress test with temperature and per-core analysis. Loads the processor under sustained workload while recording temperature and clock behaviour for each core. It detects thermal throttling, unstable cores and uneven heat spread. Results show whether cooling is adequate under real load.
  • Counterfeit capacity test. Verifies that a drive or USB flash device actually contains the capacity it reports. Fake devices often claim larger sizes than the physical memory supports. The test writes and reads data across the full address range to expose such fraud.
  • USB-port test. Checks each USB port for data transfer, power delivery and controller errors. The function identifies dead ports, intermittent connections and ports that fail under load. This is useful when diagnosing peripherals that disconnect randomly.
  • PCIe link health. Reads link width, link speed and correctable error counters for PCI Express devices. It recognises repetitive correctable bits as ASPM link-power noise rather than real faults. This separates harmless power-management events from genuine hardware errors.
  • Fans and voltages. Reads fan speeds and voltage rails through the firmware interface. The tool flags fans that spin outside expected ranges or rails that deviate from tolerance. This supports diagnosis of overheating, shutdowns and unstable power delivery.
  • File rescue from dead drives. Copies files off NTFS, ext4 or APFS volumes that no longer boot. The function works without mounting the file system in an operating system, and it can read from a drive that the BIOS still detects. This recovers customer data before repair or replacement.
  • Drive cloning around bad sectors. Creates a copy of a failing drive while skipping or retrying unreadable sectors. The clone preserves as much readable data as possible, and it produces a usable image for later recovery. This is used before a drive becomes completely inaccessible.
  • Boot and partition table repair. Rebuilds destroyed partition tables and restores boot entries on GPT and MBR disks. The function can recreate a bootloader entry that was removed by another tool or by corruption. This returns an unbootable system to a startable state.
  • Secure wipe with signed certificate. Overwrites a disk to erase all data, then issues a certificate in text, printable HTML and an on-screen QR code. The certificate is signed with the USB stick's own Ed25519 key, so a phone can verify it later. This supports resale, disposal and audit requirements.
  • Report verification. The bundled tools/verify.py script checks any report, certificate or QR code produced by the program. It detects detached signatures stored under .JSON.SIG, _JSON.SIG or .SIG, and it flags a renamed file as NOT SIGNED. This confirms that a result has not been altered after generation.
  • Hardware scan. Collects structured data about sensors, peripherals, PCIe links, the hardware error log, network interfaces, security state and storage layout. The output is signed and can be exported as a machine report. This creates a consistent record of a system's condition.
  • Built-in guide. Presents a help overlay that groups tools by symptom, such as won't boot, crashes sometimes, or checks before a machine leaves the workshop. Pressing the question mark key opens the guide from the menu. This directs a technician to the correct tool for a given complaint.
  • OS-version detection. Identifies the installed operating system version by reading the drive directly. It detects Windows 11 22H2 and other installations without booting them. This helps confirm what a customer's machine is running before service.
  • Peripheral detection. Recognises connected keyboards, mice, storage devices and other peripherals through the firmware. The function reports which devices are present and responsive at boot time. This isolates whether a fault lies in a peripheral or in the host controller.
  • Display verification. Checks the attached panel and its supported refresh rates, including high-refresh panels such as a 144 Hz AUO unit. It confirms that the display initialises correctly under firmware. This supports diagnosis of blank screens and refresh-rate problems.
  • Firmware storage-mode detection. Detects when the BIOS sets storage to Intel RST or RAID mode, which hides the SSD from standard interfaces. The tool names the controller and states the exact BIOS change needed, including the Windows safe-mode step. This explains why SMART and self-tests are unavailable until AHCI is selected.

Hardware Clinic is developed by jmsmediagroup and published on GitHub. The program reached version 1.0.0-rc7 on September 13, 2026. It is written as a from-scratch UEFI application in a single roughly 340 KB binary, built without external libraries.
