  • System diagnostics. Collects comprehensive information about the operating system, hardware components, connected disks, running processes, and installed drivers to give a complete snapshot of the machine's current state.
  • Disk cleanup. Removes temporary files, system and application caches, recycle bin contents, and Windows Update cache to free up storage space and resolve issues caused by corrupted or stale temporary data.
  • Disk repair. Checks SMART status, performs NTFS scan and SpotFix, triggers TRIM for SSDs, and schedules chkdsk on restart to detect and fix file system errors and bad sectors.
  • System integrity repair. Runs DISM, SFC, AppX, and WMI repairs to restore corrupted Windows component store files, system files, and management instrumentation to a working condition.
  • Windows Update repair. Resets Windows Update services and cache, re-registers DLLs, and forces update detection to resolve common update failures and stuck downloads.
  • Network repair. Flushes DNS, resets hosts file, renews DHCP lease, resets Winsock and TCP/IP stack to fix connectivity problems and DNS resolution errors.
  • Autostart diagnostics. Examines Run registry keys, Startup folder entries, scheduled tasks, and services to identify programs that launch at boot and may affect system performance.
  • Security audit. Checks Defender status, firewall configuration, UAC settings, performs a quick scan, and disables WPBT to assess and improve the system's security posture.
  • System tuning. Adjusts power plan, visual effects, enables End Task in taskbar, disables Sticky Keys shortcut, and restores classic context menu for a more responsive desktop.
  • Driver diagnostics. Lists problem devices and third-party drivers to identify hardware with missing, outdated, or faulty drivers that may cause instability.
  • HTML reporting. Generates a detailed HTML report after every action batch, documenting all performed operations, their outcomes, and system changes for review and record-keeping.
  • Online diagnostics. Performs layered connectivity tests, checks DNS resolution, and verifies proxy settings to pinpoint where network communication fails.
  • Debloat. Removes telemetry components, scheduled tasks, Fast Startup, Explorer ads, and Recall/Click to Do features to reduce background activity and improve privacy.
  • Printing repair. Manages printers, drivers, removes offline and ghost printers, and resets the print spooler to fix common printing failures.
  • Boot and platform repair. Repairs BCD, checks TPM, Secure Boot, BitLocker status, configures Safe Mode, and enables F8 recovery options for boot-related issues.
  • Office repair. Detects Office version and channel, manages Outlook add-ins, repairs OST/PST files, and performs quick or full Office repair to fix application errors.
  • Browser repair. Inspects extensions, policy settings, homepage hijacks, and resets browser profiles to remove unwanted changes and restore normal browsing.
  • User folder backup. Copies Desktop, Documents, Pictures, and Favorites folders to a backup location to protect personal data before major repairs or system changes.
  • Optional features management. Provides an overview of Windows optional features and enables .NET 3.5, PowerShell v2, or Sandbox as needed for specific applications.
  • Software updates via winget. Lists installed software, identifies outdated packages, and updates all applications through winget to keep programs current and secure.
  • Hardware sensors. Checks PawnIO status and installs it if needed, then reads CPU temperature and clock speed via LibreHardwareMonitor to monitor thermal conditions.
  • Deep cleanup. Removes orphaned uninstall entries, finds duplicate files, deletes broken shortcuts, and securely wipes free space to eliminate residual data and clutter.
  • Risk levels and dry-run. Every action is tagged SAFE, MODERATE, DESTRUCTIVE, or REQUIRES_REBOOT; dry-run mode is on by default so actions only print or preview without making changes.
  • Restore point and undo. Creates a System Restore Point before the first destructive or repair/security action, and records reversible actions in undo.ps1 for later rollback.
  • Audit log. Writes every action to an audit.jsonl file and generates an HTML report after each batch, providing a complete trace of all operations performed.
  • Auto-update. When running as a packaged executable, silently checks GitHub Releases for newer versions and offers to download and apply the full package while preserving settings.
  • Self-delete protection. Detects if the app is running from a folder being cleaned and excludes it; if the folder cannot be safely determined, the action refuses to run and informs the user.
  • Crash log and diagnostics export. Records crash events and provides a button to export diagnostic information for troubleshooting and support purposes.

The development of PortableFix began as a practical response to the need for a portable, script-driven repair tool that could be carried on a USB stick and used on any Windows 10 or 11 machine without prior installation. The project is maintained by vxkShelby on GitHub, with the earliest commits appearing in 2026. The application is written in Python 3.12 and uses PySide6 for the graphical interface, while the actual repair and diagnostic actions are executed through PowerShell scripts. The architecture separates the application code in the portablefix package from the declarative action catalogs stored as YAML files in the Modules directory. A build script using PyInstaller produces a single executable file, and the release process includes code signing, checksum generation, and packaging into both a portable ZIP and an installer.
