SnmpLens is a native desktop application for browsing, querying, and monitoring SNMP-enabled devices across Windows, macOS, and Linux. It consolidates MIB analysis, SNMPv1/v2c/v3 operations, trap reception, alert routing, and historical charting into a single binary with no runtime dependencies. The software renders conceptual tables by decoding INDEX clauses from MIB definitions, receives traps and INFORMs, and routes notifications to syslog, webhooks, or email based on user-defined rules. A built-in MIB editor provides line-level diagnostics for vendor modules that fail to compile, identifying missing imports and unresolved symbols. Local credentials are sealed through DPAPI, Keychain, or protected files.

  • Background operation. The polling engine runs as a Go process independent of the interface state. Monitoring sessions, threshold evaluations, and alert deliveries continue executing when the window is closed. A system-tray icon controls visibility, and a per-user start-at-login entry launches the application without elevation requests. Close-to-tray behavior is configurable.
  • Alert routing with durable journal. Traps, threshold breaches, and reachability changes are recorded in a persistent event journal. Routing rules match events by category, severity, source address, and OID prefix. Each rule supports priority ordering, a stop-processing flag, and quiet hours evaluated in the user's local timezone. Destinations include syslog over UDP, TCP, or TLS per RFC 5425, webhook endpoints, and SMTP email.
  • Durable outbox with exponential backoff. Outgoing notifications pass through a transactional outbox that survives application restarts. Delivery attempts use exponential backoff for unreachable collectors. A delivery log screen displays sent, pending, and abandoned messages with timestamps and status codes. Alert loss from a closed window or temporary network failure is prevented.
  • Message templates and custom webhook payloads. Each notification destination accepts its own subject and body templates built from a fixed vocabulary displayed in the settings screen. Webhook destinations can send arbitrary JSON instead of the standard envelope, enabling direct integration with Slack, Teams, or Alertmanager. The preview renders through the same code path as the sink, showing exact size and parse result.
  • MIB editor with two-tier diagnostics. The editing tab supports syntax highlighting, find and replace, undo grouped by edit, draft persistence, automatic backups, and bundled MIB restoration. Positioned syntax errors appear as you type. Semantic analysis runs after a pause and reports unknown types, duplicate OIDs, unresolved parents, missing modules in FROM clauses, and undefined INDEX objects.
  • Fix imports automation. The editor analyzes which symbols originate from which modules and edits the IMPORTS clause as text. Comments and alignment in the original file are preserved during the modification. A correct MIB is never broken by the operation.
  • MIB load failure diagnostics. When a vendor MIB fails to load, the application reports the processing stage reached, located diagnostics with source excerpts and carets, unsatisfied imports with their required symbols, and recognition of common mistaken downloads such as HTML pages, PDFs, zip archives, and UTF-16 files.
  • Conceptual table decoding. Table INDEX clauses are split according to RFC 2578 section 7.7, transforming raw sub-OIDs into meaningful columns. tcpConnTable appears as four separate columns instead of one opaque concatenated string. Name-keyed tables display names, and rows sort by decoded values. RowStatus columns allow row creation and deletion in a single PDU.
  • INFORM support. Acknowledged notifications are sent and received alongside unacknowledged traps. The trap listener accepts INFORMs and responds with confirmation. The sender can target a collector that requires acknowledgments.
  • IPv6 operation. SNMP targets, the trap listener, and traceroute function over IPv6 networks. Address handling supports both IPv4 and IPv6 formats in all operation dialogs.
  • Operating system credential sealing. Community strings and SNMPv3 passphrases are encrypted with keys stored in Windows DPAPI, the macOS Keychain, or a protected file depending on platform. The settings banner identifies the active backend. Ciphertext is never stored beside plaintext equivalents.
  • Target labels across all views. A label assigned to a device appears in SNMP operations, trap displays, history entries, and event logs. The underlying address remains available on hover. Labeling simplifies identification when managing multiple devices with similar addresses.
  • Sortable history in SQLite. Query history resides in a local SQLite database with no entry cap. Entries can be sorted by date, operation, target, duration, or status. Multi-select enables bulk deletion or export. Export formats include CSV and JSON, scoped to all, filtered, or selected entries, delivered to clipboard or file.
  • Anonymous mode. Target addresses and identifying values are masked on screen for screen-sharing or demonstration scenarios. The masking affects display only and resets on restart. Masking applies consistently across history, traps, and exports.
  • Native OS notifications. Windows toast, macOS notification center, and Linux desktop notifications announce incoming traps when the application window is not in front. The notification system operates independently of the main interface.
  • Typed value formatting. SNMP values are rendered according to their ASN.1 types. Binary values such as MAC addresses display as colon-separated hex. Enumerations show their symbolic names rather than numeric codes. Counters and gauges are formatted with appropriate units.
  • Bundled SNMP test agent. A Python script in the tools directory simulates an SNMPv1, v2c, and v3 agent with realistic OIDs and periodic traps. The agent enables application testing without physical devices or production network access.
  • In-app auto-update. The application checks GitHub Releases and installs updates from within the interface. Release manifests are signed with Ed25519 and verified before any file is applied. Missing or invalid signatures cause refusal, not a warning.
  • Drag and drop MIB import. Files or entire folders can be dragged onto the window for import. Duplicate detection prevents silent overwrites. Failed loads are reported in a modal listing the specific file and failure reason.
  • Network tools in pure Go. Ping and traceroute are implemented in Go without elevated privileges. The tools operate on both IPv4 and IPv6 targets.

SnmpLens was created to address the absence of a modern, cross-platform SNMP browser that combines MIB diagnostics with operational monitoring. The project originated as an open-source alternative to established tools including iReasoning MIB Browser, ManageEngine MibBrowser, and Paessler SNMP Tester. The first public release, version 1.0.0, appeared on April 1, 2026, establishing the core functionality of MIB browsing, SNMP operations, trap reception, discovery, monitoring, and network tools.
