ExitEcho

ExitEcho — Free Download. Process Monitor

ExitEcho is a free Windows utility from developer Feel1ng that tracks desktop applications and reports processes which remain active after their visible windows close. It displays process names, PIDs, and memory usage, and lets you terminate leftovers manually with confirmation. The tool also supports ignore rules, a local event history, system tray controls, six themes, and 27 interface languages. It runs on Windows 11 x64 and is distributed under the MIT license.

  • Leftover process detection. ExitEcho monitors applications that have visible top-level windows. After the last window of an application closes, the program waits for a configured detection delay and then checks whether any related processes are still running. If such processes exist, they are reported in the main interface. This detection works without modifying the monitored application and without injecting code into other processes.
  • Process information display. For every detected leftover process, ExitEcho shows the process name, the process identifier, and the amount of RAM the process currently uses. This information helps you decide whether a process is likely a background helper, an updater, or an unwanted remnant. The list refreshes when new events occur or when you reopen the application window from the tray.
  • Manual termination with confirmation. The End leftovers action is never automatic. When you choose to end one or more processes, ExitEcho asks for confirmation before sending a termination request. This prevents accidental loss of unsaved work or interruption of background tasks that may still be performing important operations. You remain in full control of every termination.
  • Ignore process rules. You can exclude a single process from future reports for a specific application. When a process is ignored, it no longer appears in the leftover list for that application. Other processes belonging to the same application remain visible. This is useful for known helper processes that always stay running by design.
  • Ignore application rules. ExitEcho allows you to suppress alerts for an entire application. When an application is ignored, no leftover processes from that application are reported. This rule is broader than the process ignore rule and is intended for programs whose background activity is expected and does not require attention.
  • Local exit history. The program keeps a local record of detected events. Each entry includes the application name, the time of detection, and the processes that were found. The history is stored on your computer and is not transmitted anywhere. You can review past events to identify patterns or repeated leftovers.
  • System tray operation. ExitEcho runs in the notification area of the taskbar. From the tray menu, you can pause or resume monitoring, open the main window, or exit the program. When monitoring is paused, no new events are recorded and no alerts are shown. A single GUI instance is enforced to avoid duplicate monitoring.
  • Detection delay setting. The application waits for a configurable period after the last visible window closes before checking for remaining processes. This delay avoids false positives from processes that shut down slowly. You can adjust the delay in the settings to match the behavior of your applications.
  • Theme selection. ExitEcho includes six interface themes: System default, Light, Dark, OLED Black, Graphite, and Midnight. The theme changes the appearance of the main window and the tray menu. OLED Black is designed for displays where dark pixels are turned off completely.
  • Language selection. The interface supports 27 languages. You can choose a specific language or use the Windows default. Changing the language updates the visible text in the main window and the tray menu without restarting the application.
  • Startup option. The settings include an optional startup entry. When enabled, ExitEcho launches automatically when you sign in to Windows. The startup entry can be disabled at any time from the settings or from the Windows startup configuration.
  • Notification control. You can enable or disable notifications for detected leftovers. When notifications are enabled, ExitEcho shows a system notification after a new event is recorded. When disabled, events are still added to the local history and remain visible in the main window.

ExitEcho was created by developer Feel1ng. The program has been developed since 2024 and is written in C# using WPF and .NET 10. It is distributed as a portable application under the MIT license. The current executables are unsigned because the SignPath Foundation application was not approved. The application has been tested on Windows 11 x64. Windows 10 compatibility has not been verified. Source code, downloads, screenshots, and a demonstration video are available on GitHub. The project does not require an account and does not collect telemetry.
