XYplorer

XYplorer — Free Download. File Management

XYplorer is a portable file manager for Windows that operates without installation and stores all configuration data in its application folder. It delivers tabbed browsing, a powerful search engine, a preview panel, and a customizable interface. The software supports dual pane view, an integrated scripting engine for task automation, and can run from a USB drive without modifying the system registry. Its tabbed navigation lets each tab retain its own folder history and settings across sessions. The application consumes minimal RAM, loads quickly, and keeps all user data in plain text format.

  • Tabbed Browsing. Users can open multiple folders in separate tabs within one window. Each tab preserves its own history, view mode, and sorting configuration. Tabs can be dragged, locked, renamed, hidden, or used as drop targets for files. Tab sets allow saving groups of tabs for later restoration, and dual pane view shows two folders side by side for direct comparison and transfer.
  • Portable Operation. The program runs entirely from a single folder without installation. All settings, scripts, catalogs, and tag databases are stored in plain text files next to the executable. Launching the application does not write to the Windows registry or create system-level changes. This design allows carrying the file manager on an external drive and using it on any compatible Windows machine with identical configuration.
  • Scripting Engine. XYplorer includes a built-in scripting language for automating repetitive file operations. Scripts can rename batches of files, generate folder reports, synchronize directories, or build custom commands. No plugin installation is required because scripts run directly within the application. A dedicated forum hosts ready-to-use scripts that cover common tasks such as duplicate cleanup, date-based organization, and complex search routines.
  • File Search. The search function supports boolean logic, regular expressions, content search, and size or date filters. Results appear in a dedicated panel while the search continues in the background. Users can save search templates for future reuse and apply live filtering to narrow down results as they type. Search operations work across network shares and removable drives without indexing overhead.
  • Preview Panel. The hover box and preview pane display file contents without opening external applications. Text files, images, audio metadata, and video frames can be inspected directly. Office documents and PDF files render through installed system handlers. The preview supports raw text extraction from many binary formats, which aids in identifying mislabeled files or recovering data from unknown extensions.
  • Customizable Interface. Fonts, colors, toolbar buttons, file icons, and keyboard shortcuts can be adjusted individually. Users can create custom columns that extract metadata from files, such as EXIF data, ID3 tags, or document properties. The rapid access section provides quick links to frequently used locations, while the mini tree displays a compact folder hierarchy. Dark mode is available for low-light environments.
  • Color Filters and Tags. Files and folders can be assigned color labels based on extension, attributes, age, or custom rules. Tags allow adding free-form metadata to any item, and the tag database remains portable alongside other application data. Color filters help identify file types at a glance without opening folders. Tag searches retrieve items across multiple directories in a single pass.
  • Dual Pane View. Two independent folder views can be displayed simultaneously for efficient file transfer and comparison. Each pane maintains its own tabs, history, and view settings. Users can drag files between panes, synchronize folder contents, or compare directory structures. The dual pane mode is optional and can be toggled with a single command.
  • Custom File Associations. XYplorer can override Windows file associations within its own interface. Specific extensions can be opened with alternative programs, portable applications, or custom scripts. This allows testing different software combinations without changing system-wide settings. Associations are stored in plain text and remain active only while using the file manager.
  • Live Filter Box. A filter field at the bottom of each file list filters visible items as the user types. Wildcards, boolean operators, and regular expressions are supported. The filter applies instantly without opening a separate search dialog. Combined with color filters and custom columns, the live filter provides rapid narrowing of large directory listings.
  • Rapid Access Section. A customizable area in the sidebar holds shortcuts to favorite folders, files, and scripts. Entries can be organized into groups with custom names and icons. The section is fully editable through drag-and-drop operations. Access entries are stored in a portable text file, making them available on any machine where the application runs.
  • Catalog Feature. Users can create a catalog panel that lists frequently used items independent of their physical location. Catalog entries can point to files, folders, URLs, or script commands. The catalog is searchable and supports categories for organization. This feature serves as a personal launcher for projects that span multiple directories or drives.
  • Mini Tree. The mini tree displays only the folders that have been visited during the current session. This reduces visual clutter compared to the full directory tree. Users can switch between mini tree and full tree modes instantly. The mini tree also supports manual expansion and collapse of branches for focused navigation.
  • Tree Path Tracing. When navigating through folders, the tree panel automatically highlights the current path. Parent folders are expanded as needed to show the location context. This visual tracking helps maintain orientation during deep folder hierarchies. The feature works in both single and dual pane modes.
  • Custom Columns. Extra columns can be added to the file list to display metadata extracted from file contents or properties. Column definitions support scripting for complex data extraction. Examples include image dimensions, audio bitrate, document author, or checksum values. Custom column layouts can be saved per tab or globally.

XYplorer was first released in 1997 by Donald Lessau, a German developer who continues to maintain the project as a solo effort. The application began as a small replacement for Windows Explorer with a focus on speed and portability. Over the years, it accumulated features through frequent beta releases and direct user feedback. The codebase is written in Visual Basic, originally using VB6 and later ported to a modern development environment while preserving the core architecture. The developer publishes updates regularly, often several times per month, and addresses bug reports within hours.
