Library Indexing. The application scans designated folders on local drives and automatically categorizes files into Music, Video, and Playlists. Shortcuts remain active even when the player window is not in focus if the global media key option is enabled in system settings.
Variable Playback Speed. Audio and video content can be played at speeds ranging from 0.5x to 2.0x without pitch distortion for audio, using a time-stretching algorithm. This function is available through the playback menu and remains active across different files until manually reset. Speed adjustments are useful for reviewing recorded lectures or analyzing musical passages.

Windows Media Player was first released in 1991 as a component of Windows 3.0 with Multimedia Extensions. The original version was written in C and provided basic playback for AVI and MIDI files. Microsoft developed the software internally, with the Windows Multimedia team leading the project under the direction of Rob Glaser before he left to found RealNetworks. Version 6.4 introduced a COM-based architecture, and the codebase was later rewritten in C++ for Windows XP. The team responsible for the modern versions includes engineers from the Windows Shell and Media Platform groups. Development shifted to the Universal Windows Platform for the redesigned player shipped with Windows 11, which uses C++ and C# components.
