Library Management. ViboPLR scans local folders with background progress reporting and real-time file watching. It syncs Subsonic and Navidrome collections into the same library. Remote collections connect to streaming services via plugins for streaming, sync, and browse actions. The publish and subscribe system exports local tracks as a self-contained, hostable music source with manifest and files, and subscribes to published manifests as collections. Smart metadata reads tags via lofty with intelligent filename parsing fallback. Full-text search uses SQLite FTS5 across titles, artists, albums, genres, and filenames, with accent- and case-insensitive matching. Genre metadata from files is stored as tags with many-to-many track relationships.
Native mpv Playback Engine. The default engine is built on bundled libmpv, providing native decode of every supported format, sample-accurate gapless playback, and exclusive bit-perfect audio output. Native video rendering works on macOS and Windows. The browser engine fallback uses HTML5 audio and video via the system webview when mpv cannot play a track. A 10-band equalizer offers simple bass and treble controls or advanced parametric EQ, plus tag-based ReplayGain volume normalization. Crossfade is configurable up to 10 seconds, and at zero seconds tracks transition gapless. Playback speed control works like a turntable with pitch following tempo.
Queue Management. The queue supports drag-and-drop reordering, play next, shuffle, and duplicate detection. Auto-continue automatically continues playback when the queue ends, using artist, tag, most played, liked, or random selections with user weighting. Radio mode starts an endless station from any track, artist, or tag. Likes use a tri-state like and dislike system for tracks, plus likes for artists, albums, and tags. These likes are durable across library, queue, and now playing views, and can be exported or imported as a portable file. A mini player provides a compact always-on-top mode with essential controls. The waveform seek bar shows visual waveform display for seeking, and video tracks get storyboard seek previews.
Home and Discovery Views. The home view is the default landing page with a radio-station carousel plus shelves for recently played, most played, jump back in, recently added, and liked tracks. Plugins can add more shelves. The now playing view is a lean-back full-screen mode with synced karaoke lyrics and plugin visualizers; video tracks expand into a theater mode. Artist, album, tag, and track detail pages include hero headers, breadcrumb navigation, and plugin information sections. The history view has tabbed sections for all time, last 30 days, recent, and artists, with arrow key navigation.
Playlist System. Playlists can be saved, loaded, and managed with cover art and thumbnail tracking. Export and import work as M3U8 or .mixtape bundles. Collections manage local folders, music servers, and subscribed sources in one place. The system tracks cover art and thumbnails for each playlist, keeping visual organization consistent across sessions.
Service Orchestration. Plugins provide stream resolution from various services, and the core app chains them with configurable priority and fallback. Scrobbling and metadata are plugin-driven, including scrobble reporting, listening history import, similar artists and tracks, bios, and community tags with TTL-based caching. Downloads save tracks with embedded tags and cover art; the downloader always follows the track source, whether Subsonic, direct URL, or the owning plugin. Lyrics come from multiple plugin providers with synced and plain formats, timed highlighting, auto-scroll, and per-track timing offset. Image providers handle plugin-based artist and album art resolution with configurable fallback chains.
Skin System. Eight built-in skins are included: Default, OLED Black, Arctic Light, Forest, Silver, Ocean Blue, Viboplr, and Sunset. Custom skins can be imported as JSON skin files or installed from the community gallery. The UI uses 19 color tokens for full theming via CSS custom properties. Optional per-skin CSS overrides are supported with sanitization applied to prevent unsafe code.
Plugin Architecture. The plugin system is the primary extension mechanism. JavaScript plugins provide streaming, metadata, lyrics, image resolution, downloads, context menu items, sidebar views, home shelves, now-playing info items, visualizers, event hooks, settings panels, and scheduler tasks. Built-in plugins include Last.fm for scrobbling, history import, similar artists and tracks, bios, and community tags; lyrics providers LRCLIB and Lyrics.ovh; and artwork providers TheAudioDB, Deezer, iTunes, and MusicBrainz. Gallery plugins are installed from the in-app gallery and include Spotify, TIDAL Hi-Fi, YouTube via yt-dlp with search, play, and download functions, Genius song explanations, qBittorrent, visualizers, and more. Plugins render via a structured data model with track lists, card grids, stats, and text, without raw HTML injection. Plugin management lets users enable or disable plugins, toggle individual contributions, reorder providers, auto-update, and configure settings via the Extensions view.
Profiles and Onboarding. Profiles work like Chrome isolated profiles, keeping library, settings, and plugins separate per profile. The onboarding wizard guides first-run setup with usage profile selection, skin choice, source configuration, recommended plugins, and companion tools. Managed dependencies detect, install, and auto-update external tools that plugins rely on, such as ffmpeg and yt-dlp. Entity images for artists and albums use a plugin-based provider chain with configurable priority. Tag composite images are auto-generated from top artist images.
Context Menus and Diagnostics. Native OS right-click menus appear everywhere, with plugin-registered actions on every track surface. The report a problem feature creates a one-click diagnostic bundle that is reviewed and submitted by the user; nothing is auto-sent. Auto updates check for and install new versions via stable and opt-in beta channels. The application runs cross-platform on macOS and Windows.

ViboPLR development began in 2023 as a project to address the fragmentation between local music libraries and streaming services. The development team focused on a plugin-first architecture from the start, choosing Tauri 2 for the desktop shell, React for the interface layer, and Rust for performance-critical backend operations. The first public release appeared in 2024 after extensive testing of the mpv integration and SQLite FTS5 search system.
