VLC Media Player is a free multimedia solution that handles files, discs, webcams, devices, and streams. It plays most codecs without requiring additional codec packs, including MPEG-2, DivX, H.264, MKV, WebM, WMV, and MP3. The program provides hardware decoding, subtitle synchronization, and video and audio filters across platforms.

  • Hardware Decoding. VLC implements hardware decoding on most platforms, supporting 0-copy on the GPU. When hardware acceleration is unavailable or incompatible with a specific codec, the player automatically falls back to software decoding. This mechanism reduces CPU load during playback of high-resolution video files such as H.264 and H.265 content while maintaining stable frame output.
  • Broad Format Support. The player recognizes an extensive list of video codecs including MPEG-1/2, DivX versions 1 through 6, MPEG-4 ASP, XviD, 3ivX D4, H.261, H.263, H.264, Cinepak, Theora, Dirac, MJPEG, WMV 1/2, WMV 3, VC-1, Sorenson 1/3, DV, On2 VP3/VP5/VP6, Indeo Video v3, and Real Video versions 1 through 4. Audio codec coverage spans MPEG Layer 1/2, MP3, AAC, Vorbis, AC3, E-AC-3, MLP, TrueHD, DTS, WMA 1/2, WMA 3, FLAC, ALAC, Speex, Musepack, ATRAC 3, Wavpack, Mod, TrueAudio, APE, Real Audio, Alaw, µlaw, AMR, MIDI, LPCM, ADPCM, QCELP, DV Audio, QDM2, QDMC, and MACE.
  • Subtitle Handling. VLC reads multiple subtitle formats including MicroDVD, SubRIP, SubViewer, SSA1-5, SAMI, VPlayer, closed captions, Vobsub, Universal Subtitle Format, SVCD, CVD, DVB, OGM, CMML, and Kate. Subtitle synchronization can be adjusted in real time during playback, allowing users to shift subtitle timing forward or backward to match the video track.
  • Metadata Parsing. The player extracts and displays tag information from ID3 tags, APEv2 tags, and Vorbis comments. This metadata includes track titles, artist names, album information, and cover art embedded within the media container.
  • Advanced Playback Control. VLC includes a complete set of controls over video playback, subtitle synchronization, and audio and video filters. Users can modify playback speed, apply audio equalization, adjust contrast and brightness, rotate video, and apply post-processing filters to improve output quality.
  • Network Streaming Input. The program accepts input from UDP/RTP Unicast, UDP/RTP Multicast, HTTP, FTP, MMS, TCP/RTP Unicast, DCCP/RTP Unicast, local files, DVD Video, Video CD, SVCD, Audio CD, DVB sources including satellite, digital TV, and cable TV, MPEG encoders, and video acquisition devices.
  • Container Format Support. VLC opens MPEG (ES, PS, TS, PVA, MP3), AVI, ASF, WMV, WMA, MP4, MOV, 3GP, OGG, OGM, Annodex, Matroska (MKV), Real, WAV including DTS variants, raw DTS, raw AAC, raw AC3/A52, raw DV, FLAC, FLV, MXF, Nut, Standard MIDI, SMF, and Creative Voice containers.
  • Disc Playback. The player handles DVD Video, Video CD, SVCD, and Audio CD formats. DVD menu navigation works through the built-in interface. Audio CDs without DTS-CD support remain playable through standard Red Book audio extraction.
  • Streaming Announcement Protocols. VLC supports SAP/SDP announces, Bonjour protocol discovery, Mozilla and Firefox browser plugins, ActiveX plugin integration, SVCD menu systems, localization files, CD-Text retrieval, CDDB CD information lookup, IGMPv3, IPv6, MLDv2, and CPU acceleration instructions.
  • Input Device Capture. The software captures video from webcams, TV tuner cards, and other acquisition hardware. Device streams can be played locally or broadcast over a network using the built-in streaming engine.
  • Playback Filters. Video filters include deinterlacing, cropping, color adjustment, and rotation. Audio filters provide equalization, compression, spatialization, and channel mixing. These filters operate in real time during playback without requiring file re-encoding.
  • File Conversion. VLC converts media files between supported formats. The conversion process uses the same decoding and encoding libraries as the playback engine, maintaining consistency in output quality and compatibility.

VLC development began in 1996 as a student project at École Centrale Paris. The original developers included Michel Kaempf and Christophe Massiot. The program was initially created to stream video across the campus network. The name VLC originally stood for VideoLAN Client, referencing the VideoLAN project that produced the software. Development later expanded beyond the university environment when the project became free software distributed under the GNU General Public License in 2001.
